Representing my father at the Bangalore Literature Festival last month was a surreal experience. As I spoke about his book “Small Cogs in a Large Wheel: A Civil Servant’s Life”, I felt a mix of emotions. From the skepticism of publishers about a posthumous memoir to my own terminal cancer diagnosis, there were so many moments when I thought this book would never become a reality. While I was proud to share Papa’s story with the world, I felt the weight of his absence tremendously. There was a huge sense of resentment that when his story has finally reached the world, he is not around to talk about it himself. On the other hand, I also knew that if someone had to represent him, he would have wanted it to be his daughter. I was worried about breaking down during the conversation, but I think I held my poise and calm. As always, I hope Papa would be proud. @TweetsNaresh If you're interested, here is the recording of the session: m.youtube.com/watch?v=L4yEGN… The book is available on Amazon: amazon.in/Small-Cogs-Lar…. @WestlandBooks @TeamPratilipi @ThEbmr @gautamreader @BlrLitFest

It was an overwhelming response (though not surprising) earlier this month at the launch of my father’s memoirs “Small Cogs in a Large Wheel” published by @WestlandBooks. From desperately trying to self-publish a copy of the book to show my father when he was in a critical condition in the ICU 2 years ago to nearly losing my own life to cancer to being unable to even put together photographs for inclusion in the book when I was at my lowest ebb in the struggle with depression, there have been SO many moments when I thought this book simply wouldn't become a reality. But I'm delighted that with Papa's blessings & @ambesh_tiwari's support, his story is now being shared with the world. The guest of honor at the book launch was Mr. @amitabhk87 whose speech was simply riveting & such a great tribute to my father & his lifelong accomplishments. He highlighted many attributes of my father's incredible life - both personal & professional -& also how the book is a "breezy" must-read for anyone in public life or those with an interest in the civil services, multi-lateral diplomacy or understanding the major events in the country's history & politics from the lens of a model civil servant like my father. It was heartwarming to hear from Papa’s batchmates @swarup58 @balvinderkuma11 reminiscing so very fondly about old times. Papa’s probationer in Etawah @spgoyal (Goyal uncle to me) shared so many wonderful facets about my father as a boss, mentor & human being. Gratitude to Dr. Francis Gurry for sharing a video message for the launch. My father & Dr Gurry had a close professional & personal association at @WIPO for 12 years & my father has written extensively about that in the book. The most special part of the evening for me was my mother meeting so many of Papa’s dear batchmates & friends after a long time & the smile that brought on her face. The recording of the book launch is here: lnkd.in/dTFM2P6u The book is available in all bookstores & on Amazon: lnkd.in/dsWMSP9R

Want to read about the moments that shook modern India from a frontline observer? From the assassination of Indira Gandhi, to the demolition of the Babri Masjid, and from the murder of renowned badminton player Syed Modi to the sweeping liberalisation reforms of 1991. All this and more in my dad’s book available now in bookstores and on Amazon at discounted prices! A witty and humorous memoir penned by a man who spent 31 years in the Indian Administrative Service and 14 years in the United Nations. Worked across 3 states in India, with multiple ministers and chief ministers. Is credited with transforming @WIPO from a “white man’s club” into an inclusive organisation. Recognised as 1 of the top 10 people in Intellectual Property in Asia Pacific and the man behind the modernisation of India’s IP infrastructure. A civil servant and international diplomat par excellence! Order your copy here - amazon.in/Small-Cogs-Lar… @IASassociation @spgoyal

I am overwhelmed as I hold the first copy of my dad’s book in my hands. This was his labor of love (typed entirely on his mobile phone - yes I can’t stop saying that!) and then it became my most special project over the last two years. There have been so many downs in this journey of getting his memoirs published. I myself was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in this period, have had to battle my way through severe depression, anxiety and even a relapse just a few months back. At least on 2 occasions I came close to losing my life and the book project had to go on the back burner but I was determined to make this happen. I can’t wait for the world to read the memoirs of not only the most incredible civil servant and international diplomat, but more importantly the best ever husband, father, friend and human being. The book is truly a celebration of his life! Everything I do is for you, dad, but this one is especially for you and I’m sure you know it ❤️😊 Thank you to the team at Westland for all your support! Please order your copy of this incredible, witty and humorous memoir: amazon.in/dp/9357768327?…

Back to college! 16 years ago I joined a class of 26 students from 19 countries across the world for my MPhil program. I was apprehensive about doing this program as I was one of the youngest to be admitted & most of my classmates had considerably more work & life experience than I did. But it was my dad’s dream to see me study at a University like Cambridge. And so I eventually accepted the offer. Of course, it turned out to be one of the best experiences of my life & I really wish I could do it all over again! As I stand outside my college (St. Catherines) again, I deeply miss my dad but I know he is smiling seeing me here. Maybe I should consider getting back to studies 😊 @Cambridge_Uni #universitylife #cambridgeuniversity #studentlife #IndiaUK #IndiaUKAchievers

The last message I got from my dad. I was his pride. His only asset as he would say. On days when I am overwhelmed by grief, pain, anxiety & depression I read his messages to remind myself why I am still in this fight against all possible odds. #cancer #cancersurvivor #fatherdaughter #dad @TweetsNaresh

It’s two years Papa but that morning of 3rd July feels just as raw. When the world kept going for everyone but mine stopped forever. The hole in my heart is just as big & the knife still pierces through it just as strongly. I am convinced that it is the trauma of your leaving me that gave me this dreadful disease which has now put me in a battle for my life. For till you were around, I never even needed a blood test. That was your magic & healing touch. Despite all the grief & trauma, I still keep going every day. Hope you are proud of me. Love you the most till my last breath.

When it comes to celebrating this man, everyday is Father’s Day for me. A skilled bureaucrat, international diplomat, thorough professional who could also goof around this. This photo was taken after one of my dance performances, when he also decided to pose! Always the life of any occasion. Love you mostest Pa. #fathersday #Fathersday2023 @TweetsNaresh
