Today is James Baldwin’s birthday. While you will have many waxing poetic about his prose, do not separate his prolific writing skills from his politics. Baldwin’s views on the world would have him banned and blacklisted by many who claim to honor him today.
Think about his views in 1961, and put them in conversation with global conversations in 2025.
Read. If you are going to read Baldwin, read him in a way that transcends the box that many try to put him in. Read beyond the Baldwin that they’re okay with promoting.
