One of the first times The Sopranos tells you exactly what kind of show it is comes when Meadow asks Tony a very simple question:
“Are you in the Mafia?”
Tony doesn’t answer like a criminal who has been caught. He answers like an offended suburban father.
He talks about waste management. Italian-American stereotypes. The insult of his own daughter believing such a thing.
“There is no Mafia.”
It would almost work if Meadow were still a child.
But she has lived in that house her entire life. She has seen the money, the visitors and the way certain conversations suddenly stop when she enters a room.
She isn’t asking because she needs information. She is giving Tony a chance to stop insulting her intelligence.
“Dad, I’ve lived in the house all my life.”
That is the line that punctures the whole performance.
Tony thinks he has kept his two lives separate. Meadow quietly tells him that the separation never existed.
Eventually, he gives her something:
“Part of my income comes from legitimate businesses.”
A perfect Tony Soprano confession. Not quite a lie, but nowhere near the truth. He admits just enough to feel honest while keeping everything ugly safely unnamed.
And Meadow sees exactly what he is doing.
The strange part is that Tony almost seems proud of her. She figured him out. She is smart enough to see through the waste-management story and force him closer to the truth than most people ever get.
But closer is as far as Tony can go.
He wants the intimacy of being an honest father without surrendering the secrecy that keeps him alive as a gangster. He cannot have both.
That conflict is already there in the first season. Tony can hide evidence, intimidate witnesses and lie to investigators.
But the FBI needs proof.
Meadow doesn’t.

@EdScarpo They like to dust off the gear once in awhile down there in Englishtown.
Coulda just sent a trooper or two to knock on the door, he would have come out.

@DEADLINE Pattinson is excellent at being a dickhead on screen, which is why it was fun to watch him be the good guy in Die My Love.
Which was weird and I still don’t know if I liked it or not.

@cynicalanalyst2 @NiohBerg Because I don’t need to revisit that level of viciousness again.
Brilliant film, created brilliantly, but I’m good on that.

One of the greatest films ever made is Apocalypto.
Filmed with a 100% Native American cast, and spoken entirely in the Mayan language. It's a masterpiece because it respects the region and the time period.
Had it been made with English speaking actors from all over the world, it wouldn't have worked at all.
Try again, Claire.

@Jimfrombaseball Billy Martin is on a short list of best baseball managers of all time.
What hurt him was his lack of self control. It’s possible that’s what killed him.

"I get fired because I'm not a yes-man.
The world's full of yes men.
The first year that I became the Manager in 1969 with the Twins, I won a Division Championship.
And got fired.
The Tigers hired me.
I had made $35,000 and the Tigers gave me a big raise.
I won another Division Championship and got fired again.
Then Texas hired me with a bigger raise.
I came in second, and I got fired.
The Yankees hired me, and tripled my salary.
When I got fired there, Oakland hired me and gave me an unbelievable raise.
I've got a long-term contract now, but if I get fired again, I might run for President."
Billy Martin.

(Somber, serious tone) Hey now. My run on The Howard Stern Show ended this week after 12 amazing years (an eternity!). Incredibly grateful to Howard and the whole gang for the ride and excited for what’s next. If you know me, like me, or are even vaguely aware of me and don’t hate me and you’re working on something cool, hit me up.

A guy bought a $1,500 Samsung TV 3 years ago.
He watched Netflix. He watched YouTube. He thought the picture looked fine. He assumed that's just what a TV looks like.
His friend, a home theater installer who calibrates TVs for a living, walked into his apartment and looked at the screen for 5 seconds.
"You're watching everything in demo mode. The motion smoothing is on. The eco dimmer is cutting your brightness by 40%. Your TV is taking a screenshot of your screen every 30 seconds and selling your viewing data to advertisers. And you're watching a $1,500 panel in the same picture mode Best Buy uses under fluorescent lights to make TVs pop on a showroom wall."
He changed 9 settings in 12 minutes.
The picture looked like a different television. The soap opera effect disappeared. The colors became natural. The TV stopped spying on him.
Here's every setting he changed 🧵

Harvey Keitel made Pulp Fiction (1994) happen. He passed the script to Bruce Willis. Securing a superstar like Willis was the only reason Miramax agreed to finance the film's $8.5 million budget.

WOW 🚨: Morning Joe host Joe Scarborough continuously pressed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer: “No, no, no. Hold on a second. You’ve got to answer my question first. Yeah. Is it a good thing that Iran—and I think you would agree with me—epicenter of terrorism in the world since 1979, is it good that their military infrastructure is being degraded to the degree that it is, yes or no?”
Chuck Schumer: “You can’t, because it’s a premature question. What is going to happen in the next several months?”
Joe Scarborough: “No, no. No, no, I can ask that question... I’m simply asking, on the military side, is it good? Regardless of whether we agree with going in or not, is it good that Iran’s military infrastructure has been seriously degraded?”
Chuck Schumer: “What’s going to happen three months from now? Is it worth it? What’s going to happen? Will the world economy collapse? Will something happen even worse? Will the whole energy infrastructure of the world go up in smoke? So you have to—when they do it without planning, when they do without understanding where they’re going—”
Joe Scarborough: “Oh, let me answer the question for everybody in America. The answer is yes. It’s good that the terrorist regime’s military and capabilities have been degraded radically.”
