In 2015, Victoria Cilliers jumped out of a plane thousands of feet in the air and experienced double parachute failure. Somehow, she miraculously survived.
Victoria Cilliers was an experienced skydiver who had completed over 2,600 jumps.
On Easter Sunday 2015, she stepped out of a plane at 4,000 feet above a drop zone in Wiltshire, England, on a jump arranged and paid for as a gift by her husband, British Army sergeant Emile Cilliers.
Both her main and reserve parachutes failed, sending her into an uncontrolled spiral toward the ground at 60 miles per hour.
Witnesses were so certain she had died that a body bag was brought to the scene.
She survived only because she landed on a soft, freshly ploughed farm field.
She suffered life-threatening injuries including a shattered pelvis, multiple fractured ribs, and spinal injuries, and spent weeks in intensive care.
Because dual parachute failures are exceptionally rare, police opened an investigation and quickly discovered the failure was not accidental.
Forensic specialists found that the slinks had been deliberately removed from both the main and reserve canopies.
Suspicion fell on Emile, who had been witnessed taking Victoria's parachute rig into an airfield bathroom the day before the jump.
What made the case even more chilling was that the parachute was not Emile's first attempt.
Just days earlier on March 29, 2015, a gas valve at the family home had been loosened, filling the property with gas while Victoria and their two young children, an infant and a three year old, were inside.
Victoria smelled the leak in time and they narrowly escaped.
Investigators uncovered that Emile had been having multiple affairs and wanted to claim Victoria's life insurance to pay off his debts and start a new life with a girlfriend who believed he and Victoria had already separated.
He had brought their two young children to the airfield to watch their mother's jump that day.
After two trials, the first jury failing to reach a verdict, Emile was convicted of two counts of attempted m*rder in May 2018 and sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 18 years.
The judge described his crimes as "wicked" and "of extreme gravity." Victoria has since rebuilt her life, returned to work as a physiotherapist for the Ministry of Defence, and written a memoir about surviving the ordeal.
