As Texas prepares to host one of the world’s largest sporting events — the FIFA World Cup — DPS continues to strengthen efforts to protect Texans and the millions of expected visitors. DPS now has the legal authority and enhanced capability to mitigate drones that pose a threat to public safety, critical infrastructure and large-scale events. DPS encourages all drone operators to fly responsibly, check your airspace before takeoff and follow all federal and state laws. Unauthorized drone activity in restricted or protected areas may result in enforcement action.

This morning, the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) honored the lives and legacies of DPS officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty at this year’s annual Peace Officers Memorial Service in Austin. We were honored to welcome Texas Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows as our guest for today’s service, joining us as we reminded families of the fallen that their loved ones’ stories will never be forgotten. Families of fallen officers, including those of Trooper Jerry Wayne Adamick Jr. and Trooper Daniel Robert Shown, also joined us for a special wreath-laying ceremony during today's service. Trooper Adamick and Trooper Shown lost their lives in service to their fellow Texans in September 2025 and February 2026, respectively. Honor the legacy. Forge the future. For decades, the PT field at DPS headquarters has seen thousands of Recruits earn the title of Trooper. The storied ground has carried the blood, sweat and grit of generations of Texas State Troopers—building character and strength in every Recruit’s journey through the DPS Training Academy. Now, with necessary upgrades to DPS’ PT field and the construction of the new DPS Training Academy in Florence underway, the department is ensuring the legacy embedded in the soil from the original field carries on. Last week, Colonel Freeman F. Martin joined the Training Operations Division for a special soil transfer ceremony before the PT field’s final site clearing. Prior to the ceremony, members of Recruit Class D-2025 participated in one final workout across remnants of the original field. During the ceremony, Colonel Martin addressed D-2025 Recruits and highlighted the significance of the PT field and its history before a portion of the revered soil was placed into a container. The soil, which was shoveled by the two most tenured employees and youngest D-2025 Recruits at the ceremony, will be stored and eventually spread across the PT field at the new Florence facility upon its completion.

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), in partnership with the Governor’s Committee on People with Disabilities (GCPD), has made changes to Texas driver license (DL) and identification (ID) cards under the Texas Driving with Disability Program to improve communication between law enforcement and ALL Texans. Now, customers participating in the Texas Driving with Disability Program can have the “Communication Impediment” or the new “Deaf/Hard of Hearing” option placed on the front of their DL or ID card – allowing them to alert law enforcement that they have a disability or health condition that may impede their ability to communicate. CAPTURED: Texas 10 Most Wanted Sex Offender Kit Edward Lulow is now back in custody after he was located in Mexico. The U.S. Marshals Joint East Texas Fugitive Task Force coordinated Lulow’s capture, and he was turned over to the Texas Rangers at the Progreso Port of Entry last week. Answering the call to serve runs in the family for these DPS employees in Lubbock. For nearly two decades, Texas Highway Patrol Sgt. Michael Mickley and his wife, Christina Mickley, an Assistant Manager in the Driver License Division, have served their fellow Texans at DPS. On Friday, DPS honored fallen Trooper Randall Wade Vetter at a boat dedication ceremony in Canyon Lake. Trooper Vetter tragically lost his life on Aug. 7, 2000, succumbing to injuries he sustained during a traffic stop near Kyle just a few days before. Trooper Vetter courageously served his fellow Texans, and his legacy has left a lasting impact on this department. This patrol vessel named in his honor will serve as a permanent reminder of his service and sacrifice.
