🚨 Now let’s imagine Chelsea actually end up with Xabi Alonso. We all know his preferred setup is a back 3 with wingbacks, and honestly, I’ve got zero worries about Cucurella on that left side. My concern is the right. Especially after Gusto’s showing today. Chelsea have always been blessed with right-backs who knew how to attack AND defend properly. From Ferreira, to Bosingwa, to Ivanovic, to Azpilicueta, to Reece James. Yes, they all offered something going forward, but their actual job, defending, they were solid at it too. Can’t say the same for Gusto right now. And this is where it gets interesting. If Xabi comes in and decides to use Reece James as a right centre-back, which honestly feels very possible, then Gusto becomes the one expected to own that entire right wingback role. Do I trust him to start every week for a Chelsea side trying to seriously compete again? Honestly, no. Not yet. People forget how important Victor Moses became under Conte. He understood the role. Had discipline. Did the dirty work. Knew when to attack and when to stay switched on defensively. That system only works when your wingbacks are reliable. Personally, I’d rather see Reece James as the wingback, then Chelsea go sign TWO serious centre-backs to partner Colwill. Van Hecke is one for me, then the SD can sort the second one out. Because if Chelsea are serious about getting back to the top, standards have to return too. Gusto can still be a useful squad player. But as a starter for an elite Chelsea side?
