Somerset, Kentucky has been declared a mass casualty event after a violent tornado struck the area last night with insufficient warning. It is also in a National Weather Service coverage gap left by Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s cuts to the NWS. DOGE likely cost lives last night.

@andrebttx The nature of nocturnal and rainwrapped tornadoes is such that it’s difficult to determine if it’s on the ground or not. The NWS heavily relies on storm chasers for valuable information and with it being night time and rainwrapped the fact they got a PDS down so early is amazing

@andrebttx PDS was issued at 11:30 the tornado touched town at 11:49 and struck the western edge of London at 12:00. That’s 30 mins of warning and not just the almost 2 hours of tornado warnings in the area but a PDS warning. Given the unpredictable nature of tornados that’s a job well done

@andrebttx @dentalfairie I was watching Ryan Halls stream last night… there was a PDS set 20 MINS BEFORE the tornado even touched down and 30 mins before it even hit London and somerset. The NWS did everything it could and did it PERFECTLY.

@dentalfairie It’s not that there was no notice at all, it’s that it was insufficient, and a fully staffed NWS could have made a different decision. A radar indicated tornado warning is different from a particularly dangerous situation confirmed tornado on the ground.
