I've been waking up earlier in the mornings to read books and drink coffee before the day starts and WHY WAS I NOT DOING THIS EARLIER?

My favorite thing about working at a small liberal arts college is running into the student who emailed me they were sick right before class begins or right after class ends. They always act so awkward, and I have to remind them that I don't care about them missing my class.

Nothing makes me want to leave a meeting more than the promise of breakout rooms.

I think about Ancient Rome quite a bit, but I don't know if that actually means anything. I also have a note in my phone where I rank my favorite kinds of sandwiches. Perhaps it just means that generally we all have diverse interests and ideas and impulses to explore and create.

But if you want to think more about Rome these days, Mary Beard's "SPQR" is amazing. Another book I really loved is "The Storm Before the Storm" by Mike Duncan. His podcast on the subject also was a good companion of mine during the pandemic.
