@DrFrancisYoung Each line should definitely have a patron saint. I also note that there are 14 terminus stations in London and 14 stations of the cross, which would make for a great Easter treat for train nerds...

This is why a one month course in how markets work should be compulsory for all incoming MPs. Don't have to pass an exam (that would not be inclusive...) but should surely be forced to at least sit thro some sessions explaining the basics.
Oliver Kamm@OliverKamm

I doubted the headline but it really is a direct quote from Paula Barker MP, who apparently thinks Andy Burnham can dictate the price at which investors will buy gilts. Finance is admittedly a technical subject but you’d expect an MP to wish to find out about it.

@DanNeidle @TypeForVictory @John_Stepek Because you didn’t apologise when you got it wrong. Had you apologised it wouldn’t matter. Had you done all your research before posting and saying “Polanski didn’t pay council tax but only one other person ever has in 35 years, and for all moorings most just pay fees” it’s fine

There is a damaging narrative that Labour built the welfare state in 1945 while Britain was broke, and that this somehow proves we can simply do it all again. It is historically illiterate and it is politically dangerous. Attlee's settlement was bankrolled by imperial surpluses, Marshall Aid, sterling's privileged role within Bretton Woods, capital controls that turned domestic savers into a captive bond market, and inflation that quietly torched the real debt. It sat on top of a state a fraction of today's size, financed by a young workforce, riding reconstruction productivity growth. None of that applies now. No imperial buffer. No Marshall Aid. No captive market. UK industry is under 2% of global output. The state already eats 45% of GDP. Expect this narrative to gain more traction in the coming days when people tell us we can just ignore the markets.

@PMLPhoto @JoolsJuevans Oddly when I investigated Zahawi, Rayner, Starmer there were really only a few people being offensively unpleasant. A handful. Tice and Polanski way different.

@John_Stepek Greens easily the most unpleasant. Conservatives easily the nicest. I think two abusive tweets across several months. Can’t wait to find out what the Lib Dems are like. I hear they’re total animals.

Guys, nobody cares that Zack Polanski didn’t pay council tax on a boat he lived on from time to time. Nobody even knows you’re meant to pay council tax on a boat. Get a grip.

@Alonso_GD Too right, Alonso, this is a stitch up against the radical left. They're running afraid of Zack and Richard. We must never let them break the bonds of class solidarity!

Do not look at the rich guy with the £5 million undeclared donation who appointed a Russian spy to lead Wales! Look at the bloke making 66k who lived on a boat to save money and may have fumbled paying £4k on Council Tax 🙄🙄🙄
Dan Neidle@DanNeidle

Zack Polanski and his partner called their narrowboat their “amazing home” for three years. He registered to vote there. If it was his main residence, council tax was due. None was paid. His team says he stayed there only “occasionally” - if true, there's a very big problem.

If you’re willing to attack reporters for correctly reporting on a politician’s taxes, you are simply a propagandist who has given up all sense of reason. It doesn’t matter that he’s your friend or that he represents a cause you support, you are no longer interested in reality.

@redelitist Prayers in council meetings have been going on since the 19th century, at least. And I can't see what's wrong with the national anthem?

A few observations: 1) Lots of cries of 'yankification' from people who also seem to think Britain has 'separation of church and state', which is (ironically) American. Britain is, and has always been, a constitutionally christian country (which is to say the state/nation itself is christian, whether a majority of the citizens are or not.) 2) Singing the national anthem is just basic civic nationalism, and it takes maybe a minute. 3) Anyone who has watched a council meeting will know they routinely dedicate significant time to the most banal stuff. It's their time to waste if they want to - though I agree, councils should not be producing motions on areas beyond the competence of councils, like foreign policy.

@simonhancock_uk The law was changed in 2015 to explicitly allow councils to do this if they wish. Want to have a bet at the amount of time spent on a short prayer and singing a verse of the national anthem over the course of a year vs the time dedicated to debates on foreign policy?

@TypeForVictory I think there was a ruling on a similar case years ago. The council couldn't have prayers as part of the formal meeting. I'd rather my councillors were doing actual work than this performative nonsense

@Heccles94 @DanNeidle If you provide two statements of fact, which contradict one another, and one is then revealed to not be true, that is generally regarded as 'lying'.
