This hot, dry October weather is spooky 👻 to some, but MAX is “fall”ing for it! We are out in Hartselle, AL for a local fall festival! We always love when we can work with our local communities!

The black streak towards the end of the time series is the signal from the storms that rolled through late this morning. The data shows how the rain “flushed” the dust out of the air temporarily, but it is beginning to filter back in now that the rain has passed.

The time-height section of Ceilometer backscatter data shows several features. The dust in the bright yellow/orange colors in the image indicates high backscattered signal return in the lower boundary layer.

Notice the haze the last few days? Us too! Our MIPS lidar Ceilometer data shows the Saharan dust that has intruded into the Tennessee Vally area this week.

@UAHSWIRLL That’s super cool!! Thanks for sharing; I really enjoy the radiosonde meteorology. Btw I found your iMet-4 that had an in-flight anomaly around 11,000ft last week during the storms in AL. The failure was with the plastic connector between the string and the balloon/chute:

Our teams were set up in N Texas today for the viewing of the solar eclipse! We were pleasantly surprised to have clouds dissipate over our sites which provided us with some amazing views and datasets!

@ChrisRemboldt Absolutely! We fielded 3 teams that launched 7 balloons from each site throughout the day. Here are two soundings from one of our sites shortly before and after totality. These soundings show a weakening of the warm inversion layer an increase in wind speeds in the low levels.

Our RaDAPS and MIPS surface data shows the reduction in incoming solar radiation and reduction in ground temperature. Relative humidity began to decrease after the eclipse which was noticeable by all teams and other viewers that were around.

Our Doppler lidar vertical data depicted building turbulence (blue=downward motion, red=upwards motion) throughout the morning which then was shut off during totality. Shortly after totality, turbulent vertical motions resumed.

MODLS Lidar positioned under totality in IL revealed a complete cessation of vertical thermal activity during, and on both sides of, the eclipse. Meteorologically, a literal mini-night #ilwx #alwx @UAHSWIRLL

On-site for the Ft Stewart prescribed burn to do micrometeorology fire science! Ignition from helicopters, then we scan the boundary layer wind flows and the smoke plume. Fire weather is severe weather!

Who said we only study severe wx?? A few of our crew took off with our MoDLS (Mobile Doppler Lidar & Soundings) to Ft Stewart in GA this morning to document the boundary layer in and around wildland 🔥 while they host prescribed burns around the fort. More to come!

Notice the haze yesterday? You're not the only one! Looks like the smoke from the Canadian wildfires made their presence known over Huntsville yesterday. Our MIPS lidar ceilometer shows this smoke as it was transported into our area overnight Sunday into Monday.
