Now we have to start asking ourselves, at what rotational velocity does a—in your terms—paratornadic vortex (especially one that is being stretched into a mesocyclone) become truly tornadic? Should they be warned? Should I zero-meter it and count it in my bio? Should I make an exaggerated report on Spotter Network? Should I even bother making a report when local emergency management will probably report it as a tornado anyway?

I don’t think James is wrong here in not classifying this as anything but scud… but these unique “scudnadoes” that clearly have rotation and a u-component of motion inhabit a special spot in my mind. I consider them to be paratornadic vortices. Mechanisms may have some cursory similarities in formation, but magnitude makes the difference

Today’s creepy scud special… northern Madison County late this morning. Video from Bob Carter.

Now could there be transient suction vortices that materialize and push this over the edge to classify it as a tornado? Yes. Can’t see any in this video though. I’ve seen rotating ground-scraping scud many times beneath updrafts. Minimal vortical structure though.

@phildstewart The more of these videos I see come out, the more I realize that people just don’t understand basic lens artifacts and parallax.

Pentagon releases this video today of an unidentified object that looks like a six-pointed star, taken by a military infrared sensor on Jan. 1, 2025.

@SpencerWeather Private enterprise can do it for half that. How about 2 S Bands!? I agree…

The cost of 1 NWS S Band radar like a modern 88D is as much as $12M according to searches. The cost of a 1 MW data center is also as much as $ 12M. Both are for “safety and commerce.” I postulate the radar is more for safety and the data center for commerce.

@moshpitmagic Just a trendline to watch as ENSO trends strongly El Nino, which makes this possibility make sense, not something to take prima facie

@CameronJNixon Yes, I live here, and yes, I will still defend Dixie as chaseable even though I live in the exception...

My stab at a "chaseability" map of the US (combining trees, terrain, and roads). What do we think about this? Anything you'd change?

This is one of the best times of year for TDWR radars. Explosive summer microbursts never get old

Last complete scan from the PGUA NEXRAD on Guam before it went offline ~55 mins ago. It's possible we lost yet another radar to a hurricane. It's last partial scan showed inbound bins of 110+mph basically right on top of the radar

For what it’s worth, my family moved to a small plains town in 2007, and I had a lot of after-school “go bike around the town and do stuff” liberty as a kid in this timeframe. One of the places I’d go was the internet cafe. That said, this was a tiny town, not literally NYC, but still. The last memory I can firmly pin down of it was probably 2009.

@MutsuAnjin @mcmansionhell They saw the existence of free-verse and took it as an invitation to abandon any sort of flow or lyricism. There’s doing free verse right… (see: David Berman)… and there’s doing it wrong.
