Did somebody order a very, very, very, very, *very* detailed tornado survey? NWS St. Louis has you covered with their revisions on the 5/16/25 tornado path...

@mldiffley It was good if you weren’t a total loser, like I was (and arguably am) lol

Tornado damage is so elusive... aerials from the Brookhaven tornado some days ago - a small home is moved and heavily damaged, and vegetation is scarred on the surface. A mobile home, notorious for vulnerability, just yards away, is untouched. Trees behind it? Toppled and snapped

@anemicroyaltywx It didn’t really exist a decade ago, not really. There was obviously a rotating roundtable of usual names on all social medias (most were on FB back 10 years ago). So called wxtwitter became what it is today around COVID

@FranklinH3000 @bdquinn Depends on the locale I reckon. I live in Huntsville which of course has an unsurprisingly purple to at times blue slant. I figure Athens or Decatur is more what you’d expect of Alabama though

@bdquinn He's underwater in *Alabama* according to this poll, and I still don't get that sense at all on the ground here, as it remains the second coming of George Wallace.

OTD 10 YEARS AGO: DOW-7 was very nearby the Sulphur, OK tornado and managed to sample 216mph before dashing away. Incredible multi-vortex structure very clear on this one (at ~10m resolution!)

@truestdonk @ThePrimalDino No worries. This brightness being so much larger than the object of eminence does a lot in helping stars be visible at night too. I believe we can only see a single-digit handful of stars as a full disk with the largest telescope arrays even

@DualDoppler @ThePrimalDino Oh no fore shore, and i hadnt really thought about the exposure length being the explanation. Thank you

“Where are all the satellites” It’s never been more over for flat earthers dude. This is it. Game set match. They’re done.
Andy Saunders - Apollo Remastered@AndySaunders_1

This is incredible. The new @NASA image release from #Artemis includes a sequence of 'Hello World' still photographs. I've been processing / animating them and here's what the original didn't show us: Satellites, including their solar arrays, lightning storms and dancing aurora!

@truestdonk @ThePrimalDino You can see satellite flares every night from earth with the naked eye. Long exposure photos like this will obviously blow them out and make them look far more substantial. It’s a far easier explanation (and the correct one) than “NASA made this up, for some reason”

@ThePrimalDino Obligatory not a flerf But that doesnt look right to me, they look like theyre moving too fast and looks like theyre way too big. Like to me i think it should be just a few really big satellites visible, or like 3x that much small satellites visible. Idk

I have seen an epidemic of untrained/unbothered mets in non-severe - though shockingly many in severe - markets doing this. Crummy composites, never using single-site radar, even never using velocity… Not saying everyone needs their own radar, but use what you do have!

@TreyTwister_WX I’ve seen media using composite radar with smoothing on during tornado warning coverage. And some still had large lightning icons overlaid, and a few more had the fill color of the polygon over it. Horrible.

2 days, 2 anniversaries of E/F5’s captured on mobile radar... OTD in 2007: UMass X-Pol is in S KS, sampling a rapidly cycling supercell that produces several tornadoes, one of which would go on to destroy the town of Greensburg #kswx

Quite the hailer near St. Louis... but the really interesting thing about it is just how many bugs (and, more notably, BIRDS) are caught up in it. Notice behind it a tail of minimal Z as it's knocked a bunch of poor fliers out of the air

This whole community can be so insufferable. We shit on each other so much for such a niche tight knit interest. We need to start spreading gratitude and positivity to each other, we’re all in this together.

OTD 27 YEARS AGO: DOW famously samples an F5 tornado in Bridge Creek/Moore, OK, but also near Mulhall. Incredible multiple-vortex structure was present on this very wide and very violent tornado

@finnegans__take The green circle very fortuitously - by literal hundreds of yards - includes Shaffers BBQ in S Middle TN, Lawrence County. The finest brisket I have had in my entire life. And I saw Jelly Roll there once, so that’s something.
