Today at the UK Global Health Summit 2026 at the Royal College of Physicians, we held a great discussion on strengthening health systems through global partnerships. I shared Uganda’s experience on how partnerships have helped build resilient systems, including strengthening our laboratory capacity. I emphasized that effective partnerships must be built on mutual respect, enabling beneficiary countries to set their own priorities for sustainable and impactful health outcomes.

The defence partnership between the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and the UK Defence Medical Services continues to grow through collaboration in military healthcare and rehabilitation. A team of UK military medical specialists recently visited the UPDF National Referral Hospital and the Defence Forces Rehabilitation and Vocational Centre. The delegation was received by Maj Gen Ambrose Musinguzi, Head of Joint Staff Medical Services of the UPDF, and engaged with UPDF medical personnel to exchange expertise and explore opportunities for collaboration in clinical care, rehabilitation, and specialist medical training. In his welcome remarks, Maj Gen Musinguzi highlighted that the UPDF National Referral Hospital is being developed into a specialised centre of excellence delivering transformative medical services, advanced medical education, and cutting-edge research. The hospital will provide a full spectrum of care; from general services to specialised and super-specialised treatments, including oncology, cardiothoracic surgery, bone marrow transplantation, and hepatic (liver) transplantation. Beyond patient care, the hospital will strengthen Uganda’s healthcare system by enhancing national capacity in diagnostics, biomedical engineering, and central sterile services (CSSD), among other critical support functions required for modern tertiary care. These advancements are expected to improve clinical outcomes for the armed forces in particular, advance medical training, and foster research and innovation across the country. In his capacity as Defence Advisor at the Uganda High Commission in London, Brig Geoffrey Cranimer Karugaba, together with his British counterpart, facilitated the visit and ensured a successful exchange of knowledge between the two defence forces. #Healthcare #UPDF #Defencecooperation @UgandaMFA @UKinUganda @MODVA_UPDF
