Today marks the anniversary of UN Security Council Resolution 2199 (2015) which condemns the destruction and looting of cultural heritage and bans the illicit trade in objects linked to conflict. Protecting cultural heritage protects people and identity. #BlueShield

#AntiCorruptionDay is not just about money. Corruption can put cultural heritage at risk through illicit trade. At Blue Shield UK our Illicit Trafficking Working Group works to protect heritage from looting smuggling and unlawful export.

This week, Blue Shield joined @DCMS at the Second Protocol Committee to advocate for stronger international protection of cultural heritage. #Dubrovnik #BlueShield #CulturalProtection

Such tragedies revealed gaps in safeguarding heritage during armed conflict and led to the 1999 Second Protocol to the 1954 Hague Convention.

On this day in 1991, Dubrovnik’s Old Town was heavily shelled, causing severe damage to its cultural heritage. The destruction was later prosecuted as a war crime.

Today, protecting heritage means being prepared. At Blue Shield UK we work with museums, archives and historic sites to build emergency plans so cultural heritage survives for future generations. #BlueShieldUK #HeritageProtection
