One email almost gave me and my whole team a sleepless night. It was one of the worst moments in our brand journey. Read this so you can avoid this costly mistake. We had invested in a premium typeface. Paid for it legally. Assumed that meant we could use it across our brand. Packaging. Logo. Website. Videos. Turns out, we didn’t have those rights. Our license only covered digital documents and static images. Everything else required separate commercial licenses. We were technically in violation. Here’s the part most early-stage founders don’t know or tend to overlook: When you buy a font, you’re not buying ownership. You’re buying a restricted license for specific use cases. Most font licenses are divided into: • Desktop : documents and static graphics • Web : embedding on websites, often capped by traffic • App/eBook : embedding inside software or digital products • Logo : usage in trademarks and brand marks • Video/Broadcast : usage in video content • Corporate : broader coverage under one entity Each has its own pricing and legal boundaries. When you’re building, you move fast. You assume you’re compliant because you paid. That assumption can turn into legal risk. We were fortunate. Because we had purchased a license, we were able to negotiate and avoid a potential lawsuit. It could have escalated badly. We had a hard time dealing with this. I’m sharing it so you don’t have to go through the same. After that, we made a strategic shift. Instead of stacking multiple paid licenses and carrying ongoing compliance risk, we transitioned our brand system to a high-quality open-source typeface. If you’re building a brand, don’t ignore legality. Fonts. Stock images. Software. Trademarks. Contracts. We had a hard time dealing with this. I’m sharing it so you don’t have to go through the same.

Dear FSSAI, You probably won’t act on this, but it still needs to be said. Stop pushing “added sugar” as the primary driver for brands. Make it compulsory to show total sugar upfront. Prevent brands from claiming “Zero Sugar” or “No Sugar Added” if the Total Sugar isn’t 0. Simple. Body doesn’t care where the sugar came from. Added, natural, fruit-based, honey, dates. Sugar is sugar once it’s inside me. What matters is how much I’m actually consuming. Yes, ingredients are listed. But let’s be honest. Expecting people to decode ingredient names and nutrition tables every time they buy food is unrealistic. Most people don’t have the time or the training for that. Labels should make decisions easier, not more confusing. If the goal is real transparency and informed choice, the clearest number is the end result: total sugar per serving. I know this may be ignored, but I’ll keep raising my voice against misleading marketing and customer disinformation.
