Staying in the U.S. after being ordered to leave? A Honduran alien learned that wasn’t going to happen after showing up for an interview at our Orlando office to try to bring his family members to the U.S. Instead, he left in handcuffs with @ICEgov.

Aliens who have committed offenses such as DUI, domestic battery, and stalking have demonstrated conduct that is incompatible with the responsibility and privilege of U.S. citizenship. So, when a Russian alien with an extensive criminal history showed up for an asylum interview, she was quickly taken into custody by @ICEgov. Public safety is our top priority, and we’re proud to work together to keep American communities safe.

As America begins its next 250 years, USCIS remains proud to work alongside U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement as part of the Department of Homeland Security. Each agency has a distinct role in supporting the Nation’s immigration system. CBP helps secure America’s borders and ports of entry. ICE enforces immigration laws and protects public safety. USCIS administers lawful immigration benefits with integrity and accountability. Together, this partnership strengthens lawful immigration, protects the homeland, and ensures the immigration system serves the security, prosperity, and interests of the American people.

Throughout the 20th century, immigration responsibilities changed as America faced new challenges: world wars, post-war humanitarian needs, labor demands, illegal immigration, global migration, and modern international travel. After September 11, 2001, the Homeland Security Act of 2002 reorganized the former Immigration and Naturalization Service mission into three agencies under the Department of Homeland Security: CBP, ICE, and USCIS (which was known as the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services from 2003 until it was renamed USCIS in 2004). The mission adapted, but the principle remained the same: immigration benefits must be administered lawfully, carefully, and in the best interest of the United States. USCIS carries forward a legacy built on law, integrity, public trust, and service.

World War I brought new responsibilities to the Immigration Service, including passport requirements, increased paperwork, and the issuance of Border Crossing Cards. During World War II, immigration administration became even more closely tied to national security. Immigration and Naturalization Service moved from the Department of Labor to the Department of Justice, expanded its workforce, and supported major wartime responsibilities. America’s 250th anniversary is a reminder that immigration administration has long been connected to national security, sovereignty, and the protection of the United States.

In the early 20th century, many immigration laws were designed to protect American workers and wages. In 1903, the Bureau of Immigration moved to the newly created Department of Commerce and Labor, reflecting the close connection between immigration policy, labor, and national interest. As America approaches 250 years of independence, USCIS remains committed to lawful immigration processes that support accountability, protect system integrity, and serve the interests of the American people.
