Construction is underway on the Coast Guard's next heavy weather surf boat, carrying forward a legendary Pacific Northwest tradition.
@USCG and Rozema Boat Works marked the keel authentication of the first Special Purpose Craft – Heavy Weather II (SPC-HWX II) in Mount Vernon, Washington — the ceremonial start of construction on up to six next-generation surf boats.
Built to operate where others can't, the 64-foot SPC-HWX II is self-righting and rated for 35-foot seas, 25-foot surf, and 60-knot winds. The class will replace the iconic 52-foot heavy weather boats retired in 2021—vessels that defined the elite Surfman community and braved Washington's unforgiving coastal waters for decades.
With first delivery expected in FY 2027, these new boats will ensure our Surfmen continue to answer the call in the "Graveyard of the Pacific."
