NEW: Iryna Zarutska Mural Honoring Her Memory Replaced by Abstract Art Piece The city of Chicago is erasing the memory of Iryna Zarutska portrayed in a mural and replacing it with an “abstract art piece.” Zarutska was attacked on a train in Charlotte, North Carolina in August 25 and succumbed to wounds as passengers tragically left her there to die. The new artwork, painted by Chicago artist Rubén Aguirre, is being touted as less “divisive.” The original portrait was part of the nationwide "Remember Iryna" campaign, funded in part by Elon Musk and tech CEO Eoghan McCabe. Critics have argued it drew disproportionate attention to Zarutska's killing, since she is white. The Chicago mural was repeatedly vandalized throughout the year. Graffiti reading "Hang Musk" was sprayed across the portrait in January, followed by multiple incidents of paint being thrown over the artwork in February and March. Leaders in Chicago's Ukrainian community said they hope attention now shifts away from the mural controversy and back to the ongoing challenges facing Ukrainian immigrants. Decarlos Brown Jr., the alleged murderer, is a repeat violent offender who was released by activist magistrate judge Teresa Stokes. He faces first-degree murder charges, although his legal proceedings are currently paused as he was deemed unfit to stand trial.
