On January 29th, 2023, the team hit a major milestone on what they call "Pour Day" and made their first-ever canoe! While there is still much work to be completed before the competition, Pour Day was a symbolic testimony to the many hours each member has spent on this project.

UVA's Student Chapter of the ASCE is competing this year against other local colleges in the Concrete Canoe Competition at Marshall University from April 13-15th. Team Look Hoos Back was formed fall of 2022, consisting of three departments: Hull, Mix, and Construction.

The topic was resilience of supply chains and energy/water infrastructure to climate change, a sponsored research project of UVA Engineering, U.S. Agency for International Development, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Commonwealth Center for Advanced Logistics Systems.

Prof. James H. Lambert gave an invited talk, Water Scarcity in Iraq: Security and Resilience, at the U.S. Embassy in Tunisia, on March 9th, 2023.

The PREEMPTIVE ASI, funded by NSF, aims to build a diverse community of researchers across the Pacific Rim and will focus on structural response control and geotechnical challenges during strong earthquakes.

Malik Corum, a PhD student in Resilient and Advanced Infrastructure Laboratory, was selected to participate in the PREEMPTIVE New Zealand Advanced Studies Institute (ASI) to be held April 15–30, 2023, in Auckland and Christchurch.

Dr. Lindsay Ivey-Burden has been named deputy director of the Center for Transportation Studies in ESE. In addition to her responsibilities as assistant professor in ESE, Dr. Ivey-Burden also now oversees the individual programs in CTS, plus provides strategic oversight.

Currently they create STEM kits from the printer's DC motors to give to local schools and after-school programs at no cost. They are also hosting an art contest this Spring!

Zack Landsman, Systems Engineering PhD 2nd year, and his team with Printers 4 Kids, received $30,000 in funding from the Jefferson Trust to found UVA's plastic recycling mill. The project is working to create a 100% retaining process for recycling E-waste.

The graduate research symposium will return to its in-person format on Friday, February 24. The event will be held in Davis Commons (Rice Hall) from 2-3:30, as part of our overall graduate recruiting efforts that weekend.

This funding will help Giovanna pursue her dissertation work investigating how tactor vibration technology can be used to communicate navigation information to divers, astronauts, and human operators in other extreme environments.

Giovanna Camacho, a Systems Engineering PhD student, was just awarded the competitive Laurel Clark Sea to Space Physiology Research Grant from the Women Divers Hall of Fame.

Marc Breton, a 2004 UVA Systems Engineering Ph.D. alumnus, has been named UVA's 2022 Innovator of the Year. Prof. Breton is an associate professor in the School of Medicine and is a co-founder of UVA's Center for Diabetes Technology. news.virginia.edu/content/uva-in…
