Congratulations to @CentralBankRw on the launch of its Financial Inclusion Dashboard! With @71point4, we're proud to have supported this initiative by developing data pipelines & refining key indicators. We're excited to see how stakeholders use the dashboard for decision-making.
Central Bank of Rwanda@CentralBankRw

During #MPFSS2025, the National Bank of #Rwanda launched the Financial Inclusion Dashboard—an interactive platform that provides weekly updates on disaggregated financial inclusion data. The Dashboard offers policymakers, financial service providers, and other stakeholders high frequent insights into key indicators such as overall inclusion, savings, credit, and insurance. I just released Coding for Economists v1.0.2. This update fixes a lot of minor issues and switches to Astral's uv (@astral_sh) as the recommended package manager. We have some new contributors too. And, big news, CfE also hit 750 stars! ⭐⭐⭐ aeturrell.github.io/coding-for-eco…

@daroczig @hadleywickham I equate this package to a package like {glue}. Such a trivial task. Such an immeasurable impact. It elevates any production script and basically, I dont recommend it, I demand it in all of the software we write. Thanks @daroczig!

'We can avoid our seemingly inevitable descent into more economic misery.' So says André de Ruyter, former @Eskom_SA CEO, in a new series where I interview business intellectuals. In this wide-ranging interview, I ask De Ruyter about where he would go if he was given a one-time-use time machine, whether there is a new Cold War brewing between the USA and China, what #SouthAfrica can learn from JFK's focus on technological advancement, and much more.

The SARB MPC meets next week for the first repo rate decision of the year. The consensus is that the interest rate will be left unchanged. But, the big uncertainty for 2024 is around the timing for the first interest rate cut - what are your expectations?

The Quarterly Employment Statistics (QES) is widely seen as a more reliable gauge of formal sector employment in SA, as this is an enterprise-based survey where firms are asked how many people they employ.

Fact-checking ANC Jan 8 speech: 'Over the last two years, the number of people with jobs has increased, bringing the level of employment to its pre pandemic level and creating an additional 300,000 jobs.' Correct according to Stats SA's QLFS, which includes informal sector jobs.

Another South African company doing cool things: fibertime. Households pay R5 for 24 hours of fast fiber internet. The company started in Kayamandi and it seems like it’s been very successful there and now going elsewhere.

@PascalMurasira We have tried to host skill development in ELK, high performance Python, Data Science in R, API integration in public institutions, dashboards using Shiny, etc. Its always been an issue. Your space is amazing, but it feels very much "gate keeping" when we have engaged.

@PascalMurasira Hi Pascal, maybe your team should start considering actually delivering a service, instead of just selling marketing. Five times now we have tried to engage with the facilities, only to be told: (1) busy, (2) person who is responsible on leave or (3) never answered our requests.

This little garden sits in a very prime location in Kigali’s city centre (opposite Cogebank HQ). We are considering adding a large screen (think of @Nasdaq’s LED screen in Times Square, NY) to be exclusively used to highlight the stories of entrepreneurs in Rwanda and beyond. Do you think this makes sense or should we do something completely different? Any ideas? Let’s do this together.

@arthurturrell @thomasforth We have also used mobile phone data in financial inclusion + mobility studies. The biggest issues were around the storage of the data and ethical concerns. Need/motivation for production is then conditional on how fast these indicators change... which I think is quite slow?

@thomasforth We have used mobile phone data before successfully (albeit not directly for travel to work) and I'm personally very confident we can slot it into the production process for this and some other stats too. In combination, it's v powerful. Some colleagues less bullish than me.

"To help validate the model, we are working on obtaining alternative data sources including mobile phone data." > I really hope that works. If it does then calibrating this type of model with mobile phone data could really importantly improve our travel to work data.
