This is why hatred against Israel is hatred against God. Throughout the centuries, the Jewish people have always been the target of hatred and ridicule. Is that a coincidence, are they just unlucky, or is there more to it? In the first verses of Psalm 83, the writer wastes no time: O God, do not be silent, do not turn a deaf ear, do not be still, O God! For behold, Your enemies rage, those who hate You lift up their heads. They cunningly plot a secret attack against Your people and conspire against Your protected ones. Come, they said, let us cut them off, so that they are no longer a people and the name of Israel is no longer remembered. (The Name of God) The Bible is about the Name of God. You would expect that the hatred and mockery of God's opponents would therefore turn against that Name. Yet we do not read about that very often in the Bible. In fact, we see much more often that the hatred and mockery turn against the name of the people of Israel, and thus not against the name of the God of Israel. Where does this focus on the people come from? For this, we go back to Numbers 6:22-27. There we find the priestly blessing. It says: And the Lord spoke to Moses: Speak to Aaron and his sons and say: Thus you shall bless the Israelites, by saying to them: The Lord bless you and keep you! The Lord make His face shine upon you and be gracious to you! The Lord lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace! Thus they shall put My Name upon the Israelites; and I will bless them. (Holy people) The people of Israel therefore bear the Name of God. God exalts the name of Israel, because His Name is connected with that of the people of Israel. Through them, God exalts His own Name. That is no small matter, and it places a heavy burden on the shoulders of the people of Israel. They must be a holy people, as God says in Deuteronomy 26:18: And the Lord has declared to you this day that you shall be His personal possession, as He has spoken to you, and that you shall keep all His commandments, and that He will give you a place high above all the nations He has made, for praise, for a name, and for a glory; and that you shall be a holy people to the Lord your God, as He has spoken. We have read that: – Israel bears the Name of God (Numbers 6) and – that this people is the personal property of God (Deuteronomy 26) If we place these two things alongside the text from Psalm 83, we gain some insight into the question of why the hatred and mockery turn against (the name of) the Jewish people. (Copycat) We know of Satan, God's adversary, that he is not really creative. The only thing he does is twist all the good that God gives and does to cast it in a negative light. He cannot come up with things himself. We read that God has linked His Name to the people of Israel. A logical counter-reaction from Satan would then be to try to erase the name of Israel. You cannot make the Name of God forgotten, but surely you can make the name of Israel forgotten?! By doing so, you would still be touching God's personal property, and moreover, Israel bears the Name of God. In that way, you strike God in His essence. The connection that the writer of Psalm 83 makes between hatred of God and hatred of the people of Israel is therefore logical in that regard. (Positive) To conclude on a positive note: it is not all doom and gloom that befalls Israel as a result of bearing God's Name. In Zephaniah 3:20, we read a hopeful promise that God makes to Israel: At that time I will bring you here, namely at the time that I will gather you together. Surely I will make you a name and a praise among all the nations of the earth, when I bring about a turning into captivity before your eyes, says the Lord.
