Did you know that Section 56(1) of the Zimbabwean Constitution says all persons are equal before the law and have the right to equal protection and benefit of the law? This means everyone, regardless of background, should be treated fairly and have access to the same rights and opportunities.

“Digital spaces must become places where women and girls thrive without fear where their voices are amplified, their rights protected, and their participation is not undermined by discrimination, harassment, or violence. As we advance into a digital future, our responsibility is to transform these platforms into spaces of safety, justice, empowerment, and equal opportunity for every woman and girl across Africa.” Doris Mpoumou, Special Representative to the African Union & UNECA

Last week in Gwanda, a major mining hub, we witnessed firsthand how irresponsible mining activity comes at a cost, primarily through environmental degradation.
Compounding this issue, the Community Share Ownership Trusts (CSOTs), designed to ensure local communities benefit from their resources, remain underutilised and poorly implemented in many districts.
With new Mines and Minerals and Climate Change Management Bills currently in development, a critical opportunity exists to shape a future where mining truly benefits both communities and the environment.
To help ensure communities take a leading role in managing their natural resources, ZELO - supported by @SwedeninZW and the ZIMACE project - convened multi-stakeholder dialogues in Gwanda. The dialogues were implemented in collaboration with the Gwanda Rural District Council, Gwanda District Development Office, and @zimshe_council.
These dialogues aimed to increase awareness of key legal and policy reforms, strengthen community engagement in national consultations and development planning, endorse an action plan for responsible mining and climate resilience, and provide recommendations to align local development with National Development Strategy (NDS2) goals.

The Collaboration Paradox:
• 64% of Community Foundations collaborate quarterly.
• 95% struggle with limited funding.
The will to work together is there. The supportive ecosystem is not.
