Two hundred and fifty years ago, a group of builders, innovators, and believers chose to pursue a future no one could guarantee. That same spirit of American ingenuity continues today. To mark our nation's moment, we've assembled a collection of 250 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images, captured by our American-designed and American-built satellite constellation. From national parks and historic landmarks to critical infrastructure and coastlines, each image reflects both the places that define our country and the technology built to better understand it. This collection is also a tribute to the engineers, operators, and builders behind Umbra. The Antarctic winter offers no daylight. Temperatures plummet. Conditions become some of the harshest on Earth. For emperor penguins, it's breeding season. For scientists, it has long been a blind spot. But even when visibility disappears, critical insights remain within reach. Researchers at the University of Canterbury utilized Umbra's high-resolution SAR imagery to detect and track emperor penguin colonies throughout the Antarctic winter, providing new insight into breeding populations during a critical stage of their lifecycle. Todd brings more than 25 years of experience across government and industry, including leadership roles at DARPA and across the broader space ecosystem. When Wagner Group boss Yevgeny Prigozhin’s plane went down in August 2023 after his short-lived mutiny against Vladimir Putin, @umbraspace's SAR imagery was the first to show the crash site; those images, taken by radar at night when cameras couldn’t see, ran on CNN and showed the state of the wreckage. For a company whose first satellites had been up for only two years, it was a significant moment. Hardware that had been designed and built by a very small team on the quiet California coast was the source of a major international headline in a bloody conflict a world away — and the images were on TV! For our latest issue, @mualphaxi went to Santa Barbara to visit Umbra, which operates one of the most sophisticated synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) constellations in the world, public or private. Vantor's high-resolution data serves as an important reference for interpreting and understanding insights from SAR imagery. Umbra operates one of the most capable commercial SAR constellations in orbit today. Their satellites deliver spotlight collections down to 25 cm resolution, with longer dwell options that improve signal return and reduce speckle. The result is radar imagery that helps analysts detect activity and identify objects even when they’re partially obscured. The goal is simple: keep SAR and EO in the same operational workflow so teams can pivot sensors without changing tools.
