In my latest column for The Press, I argue that the New Zealand government must state the illegality of the war on Iran with absolute clarity—not just to uphold New Zealand's proud tradition of defending international law, but to decisively shut the door on any future Kiwi involvement in this reckless US-Israeli war of choice. I also suggest that as the war progresses, it will reshape the political outlook of diaspora Iranians. Full link in the comments.

Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu are both going wobbly, giving signs today. They are looking for an offramp, much like they did at the 12 day mark of the war in 2025. Iran has taken tremendous damage from the combined armies, suffering serious harm – but they appear in no mood to give Trump and Netanyahu an easy off ramp this time. I assess Iran has a once in a generation opportunity, to withstand the best of the US and Israeli attacks, but now, because of the leverage President Trump handed Tehran with this ill advised war of choice, they can keep their fist around Hormuz for many months to come, and cause great harm to the American economy, and with it, the global economy. My assessment is that Iran has the capacity to endure much more suffering than has thus far been meted out, but they can endure longer than Israel and the United States. If we are foolish enough to try and solve this with a ground operation, we will only add to our cost and increase the leverage and strength of the position of Tehran.

Helen Clark is spot on. New Zealand must follow its proud history of upholding international law and maintaining an independent foreign policy by staying out of this illegal war on Iran.
Helen Clark@HelenClarkNZ

Is #NZ Govt trying to soften up the public for a military operation in the Straits of #Hormuz? Its one-sided statements have never called out the initiators of the #warofchoice in the Gulf which led to the current impasse. Quickest way to open the Straits is to stop 🛑 the war.

Winston Peters has received another memo from the US. You cannot pick and choose when to apply international law. This is an illegal war of choice that's destroying Iran and killing its civilians. If Western governments had the courage to say it clearly and call for an end to the war, we would not be in this situation today. #EndTheWar
Winston Peters@NewZealandMFA

Maritime security and freedom of navigation are critical to NZ’s interests — and crucial for global peace and stability. New Zealand supports efforts to call on all states to respect international law and to uphold the fundamental principles of international prosperity and security. This is why New Zealand has joined this statement condemning Iran’s attacks on civilian vessels ⬇️ gov.uk/government/new…

Brilliant writing. FT’s Najmeh Bozorgmehr offers her first-person experience of living under bombardment in ‘jam-filled’ Tehran. “What makes this war harder to comprehend is not only its violence but its immediacy. This is a modern city, in the present day. War feels like something that should have been left behind, a brutal inheritance of another century.” “There are images of expatriates dancing, convinced that this war will bring transformation, that destruction will clear the way for something better. It is a distant optimism that feels incomprehensible from within the blast radius. Support for war becomes something else entirely when the missiles land close enough to rattle your windows.” 👇👇

"Shameful." In an extraordinary interview, Pentagon whistleblower @WesJBryant sounds the alarm about what he calls a lack of concern for civilian casualties by the US in Iran. He was part of a Pentagon unit tasked with mitigating civilian harm, but it was gutted last year in government cuts. Worth watching in full.

The “get out and declare victory” strategy becomes even less credible the longer the war on #Iran drags on: @MearsheimerJ argues in effect that there are no good options for those who embarked on the war of choice. Meanwhile whole world suffers & poorest as always suffer most.

Trump killed Zohreh in Iran. She was not a threat. She was an elementary school teacher in Minab. She was pregnant. Trump’s Tomahawk missile killed her and her unborn baby.

Must watch #BBCQT Caroline Lucas, "I think this is an illegal reckless war with Iran that is being waged by Trump and Netanyahu" "They have massively underestimated their enemy" "Trump is a bully and a blackmailer" "He has no plan for an exit strategy, says he will exit when he feels it in his bones" "This is a President said who said he would bomb Kharg island just for fun" "He suggested he might attack Cuba as well" "The type of language Trump and Hegseth are using is just so disgusting" "I've got their words: watch what happens to these deranged scumbags today, what a great honour to kill them" "This is not Grand Theft Auto, this is real people real lives" "And yet you get the sense from the White House that this is some big game" "And all of us are suffering from it"

Today I$rael tried to kill me in a targeted airstrike in southern Lebanon as I was reporting on was the targeting of bridges and the forced displacement of 1 million people, an ethnic cleansing operation on a larger scale than the Nakba I have absolutely no doubt that this was deliberate. Despite claims there were no warnings ahead of the strike and no notifications sent to the Lebanese Army who allowed us to film As we have seen in Gaza they want to silence journalists who document and report their war crimes It is the western powers who provide political and military support for I$rael, arming it to the teeth to carry out genocide in Gaza and ethnic cleansing here in Lebanon. They are not simply complicit, but active participants and should be held accountable for their actions. But if I$rael thinks today’s strike will silence us and keep us out of the field they are very, very mistaken
