A very rare example of a Valve L Valve is already one of the most profitable game companies on earth and is clearly trying to position itself as a console rival but these pricing decisions utterly destroy that plan. At this price the Steam Deck is (another) luxury gaming good, not a household item, and honestly, it's a bad deal with better handhelds available for less money which can also run Steam OS (or Bazzite). At this price point I would recommend an OG Ally X over the Steam Deck with zero hesitation. Steam has no shareholders and almost infinite wealth coupled with relatively low costs, and even if they made a loss on "console" sales, they would more than make up for it on their 30% cut of games on the platform. What's more, if they ride out the RAM crisis with the Deck and the Steam Machine, they could finally break out of the bedroom/office and into the living room, which is where the console money exists. With a few years of absorbable loss on a handful of products. Steam is in this very strange place of it's storefront is seen as "cheap" but its bespoke products are now among the most expensive in the market.

Everyone’s being too harsh here. There has been a significant rise in the cost of components that Steam customer spending ultimately funds, and economic trends have created severe disruptions in the component parts supply chain for megayachts.
