Kenya extradites Afghan man wanted in US over drug trafficking and firearms charges Kenya has handed over an Afghan national to the United States to face serious criminal charges linked to drug trafficking and illegal firearms possession. The extradition followed a formal request from U.S. authorities and came after Kenyan courts completed the required legal processes. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the suspect was extradited on Thursday, July 9, after a Kenyan court approved his surrender to the United States. The move was the result of cooperation between several agencies, including the DCI, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the Judiciary, INTERPOL, and American law enforcement authorities. Investigators said the case began after the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York issued an arrest warrant for the suspect on March 25, 2025. U.S. authorities allege that he was involved in a conspiracy to import narcotics into the country. He is also wanted over charges related to the possession of machine guns and destructive devices. Following the arrest warrant, INTERPOL issued a Red Notice, alerting law enforcement agencies around the world that the suspect was wanted by U.S. authorities. Acting on that notice and the warrant, DCI detectives arrested him in Nairobi on April 15, 2025. Authorities said he had just arrived in Kenya from Kabul, Afghanistan, when he was taken into custody. After his arrest, the ODPP filed extradition proceedings before the Milimani Law Courts. The court later approved the request, clearing the way for his transfer to the United States in accordance with Kenyan law and international agreements. The DCI said officers collected the suspect from Industrial Area Prison and escorted him to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, where he was formally handed over to U.S. officials. In a statement, the DCI said the extradition demonstrates the strong partnership between Kenya and the United States in fighting transnational organised crime. The agency added that the process reflects Kenya’s commitment to the rule of law, respect for international legal obligations, and ensuring that individuals accused of serious offences are subjected to due process. The case is among the latest examples of cooperation between Kenya and the United States in tracking and prosecuting suspects linked to international criminal activities, particularly drug trafficking networks that operate across borders.
