It actually makes sense. Malaria doesn’t always fully leave the body. Some types like Plasmodium vivax and ovale can stay dormant in the liver for years and come back later, without recently being bit by a mosquito.
Another type, Plasmodium malariae, can live in the bloodstream at very low levels for years without symptoms.
So someone can feel completely fine and still have traces of the parasite.
I get why the UK is strict about blood safety, because even a tiny amount of that blood can infect someone with no immunity. That’s why they won’t take the risk.
