Thread 🧵 of some of the signs from my childhood that I was neurodivergent. They’re coming from an #ActuallyAutistic and #ADHD person unlike ‘official’ lists of traits. (I say ND not just autistic because I’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD as well).

Jonathan Reynolds and two senior staff went to Glastonbury as guests of YouTube. Until then, Labour was promising to increase the digital service tax from 2% to 10%. Literally the day after the festival, it emerged that Reynolds had ditched the policy. novaramedia.com/2024/09/23/rep…

7 years ago, we bought a plot of land on the US-Mexico border to stop racist billionaire Donald Trump’s dumb wall. But this year, an even richer, more racist billionaire—@ElonMusk—fucked that land with tractors and garbage, so we’re suing for $15 million. ElonOwesYou100Dollars.com

Someone said to me today, if a child was upset whilst at school about going home to their parents at the end of the school day..there would be (understandably) a lot of concern from school. YET when their child is anxious about going TO school..no one is listening.

So Huw Edwards gets a suspended sentence for buying and making pornographic images of children, while peaceful environmental defenders seeking to prevent social catastrophe get 3, 4 and 5 years. Some justice, this.

@SarahJaneLeach3 Genuine question: how would you support those who fit an autism diagnosis & have those related struggles in our society if we didn’t recognise autism? Support isn’t great as it is but how would we talk about autistic people and their needs without using the word?

I am a sociologist who is anti-psychiatry I don’t believe autism exists. I don’t believe Asperger’s exist. We are all on a continuum of being human. We have human traits. These traits can be traced back to historical and classical historical times.

Keir Starmer says he won’t shy away from “unpopular decisions” but it’s funny how the decisions are never unpopular to the super rich. After 14 years of austerity, Labour’s “tough choices” can’t yet again fall on the working class. It’s time someone else made some sacrifices.

5. Then the authors talk about an absence epidemic because families are not engaged. There’s little reflection on how schools or the ed system may be failing children. How they might become child ready. There is no scrutiny of the education system. Just families. And children.

People are very wedded to the idea that they entirely control their own destiny. If you’re ill and/or broke, it’s on you. If you’re rich and/or “successful”, it’s also on you. Not taking into account accidents, luck, family history, privilege, genes, gender pay gap, etc…
Claire 💙@clairebubblepop

There’s always so much hate towards people on benefits “who don’t pay their way” but never towards the very rich who actually don’t pay their way. I’ll never understand this need vs greed mentality where for some reason greed is perfectly acceptable and need is not. Weird.

People often keep their ill-health a secret because in capitalist societies with supremacist foundations ill health is considered a personal failing and a sign of weakness. Becoming 'unproductive' is treated like a crime unto the system

Just saw an article stating that the PIP reforms will get people into work. Eh? PIP isn't an out of work benefit. I use mine to lease a car I use for work & to pay for equipment, such as my £6.5k wheelchair so I can work. PIP covers the extra costs of being disabled ffs.

@clairebubblepop This is nonsense. No-one cares if it is genuinely a stop gap. Long term benefit claimants and those who are not genuinely sick are the problem.

I’m gonna explain one more time. For those who say people on benefits are scroungers. My story. I had a partner, we had a beautiful family, we had a good life, he died. Our youngest was 3yr, I couldn’t afford childcare, we were grieving, I was forced onto benefits. Not asking for you to feed my kids… just wanted a helping hand to get on our feet. That’s it. What is society if we don’t help each in times of need? I’m so sick of having to explain trauma over and over. Please find some compassion and understand life can suddenly hit you hard. Have you ever needed help or emergency services? Don’t judge when you don’t know someone’s story.

@Lukey1303 @clairebubblepop One of the issues is that many people who genuinely need benefits struggle to get them because of a perception that they don’t need them. So when public discourse is heavily focused on catching people playing the system, it feeds into these problems people already have.

@clairebubblepop This is sad I’m sorry you went through this and hope you are back on your feet, but when I moan about benefits I’m moaning about lazy people who play the system (I know this happens as I have family members that do it) - I absolutely support benefits for those who gen need it

My "high functioning autism" is basically everyone else seeing me as completely normal but maybe just a bit picky/particular... while internally, it's me in constant sensory overload, social overload, and fighting against my executive dysfunction to just do stuff... Anyone else?

In the US most homes also have air conditioning. From reading, apperently most homes in the UK dont(correct me if Im wrong.) So if you were here for the summer, while it can easily be 30°C+,you will be fairly cool inside since most places/homes are air conditioned. It ia humid here too, oppressive heat and I have low tolerance,so I dont go outside all that much.
