The Agony in the Garden, from a 14th-century Book of Hours. Christ is alone, the apostles sleeping, but in the darkness behind him a gallery of medieval faces - kings and queens and ordinary people - keeps vigil with him through the night. (BL Yates Thompson MS. 13)

At his General Audience, Pope Leo XIV said lay people are essential to the Church’s mission, bringing the Gospel into everyday life. Continuing his catechesis on Lumen gentium, he stressed that all the baptized share equal dignity and are called to witness to Christ “in the workplace, in society, and in all human relationships,” promoting justice, charity, and peace.

A Maundy scene in an Anglo-Saxon manuscript: monks washing feet and a king giving to the poor. Maundy Thursday takes its medieval name from these acts of charity, following Christ's commandment at the Last Supper. His 'mandatum' became 'mandé' in French, 'maundy' in English.
