BC's $500 million Rental Protection Fund is now the biggest buyer of apartments in BC. It helps non-profits purchase and maintain older housing stock to protect renters from skyrocketing rents and displacement.
Ontario does not have a similar program.

For example, currently 90% of shares in a co-operative must be owned by members. This makes it hard to raise funds from charitable foundations, specialty funds, or non-members who want to support the mission of a co-operative.
