@not_your_LL @housing4allNY It does not apply to holdover evictions, which is when a landlord arbitrarily chooses not to renew a lease. For month-to-month tenants in Syracuse (which many are), this means a landlord can choose to not renew their lease after they call Codes and doesn't need to cite a reason.

We spoke with a tenant yesterday in Syracuse who was evicted exactly one month after calling Code Enforcement in a holdover or 'no-cause' case that was clearly retaliation. Meanwhile, slumlords in Syracuse fail to make repairs and cycle through tenants. We need #GoodCause NOW.

Yesterday the Senate passed my bill S5905, which prevents children from being listed on eviction warrants. After talking about the merits of the bill, I took time on the floor to demand that we pass Good Cause Eviction. 9 Senators joined me. 🏠Let's pass Good Cause this year.

It is shameful that we still have to fight in New York just to get the basic protections that #GoodCause would afford tenants, when Good Cause has already been the law in New Jersey for decades. This is what we're fighting for in this year's budget. Right now.

"But without Good Cause, landlords don’t have to give a specific reason for evicting tenants. [The] new owners are evicting King, 'not because she’s done anything wrong, but because the landlord doesn’t have to give a reason and can just go to court and...evict her.'"
