In 2015, Chinatown Tenants Union helped win the first rent freeze in 46 years. In 2026, @DMJulieSu and @caaav are spreading the word about our Rental Ripoff Hearings to working-class families in Chinatown who are once again facing rising costs and housing instability.
Tomorrow's Rental Ripoff Hearing is at capacity, but we want every voice to be heard. Submit your testimony or register to attend a future hearing at rentalripoffs.nyc.gov

We predict that landlords may pass secret broker fees onto tenants via rent hikes. Organized tenants know that our primary defense is rent-stabilization, which protects ~50% NYC tenants... We must protect & expand RS to ALL tenants, so NO ONE is hit with secret broker fees.

Organized real estate took a major hit today—their primary lobbying arm, Real Estate Board of New York (REBNY), has lost the broker fee battle. FARE ACT will protect tenants from being unfairly squeezed by landlords. But already, we see opposition from REBNY & Eric Adams.
Curbed@Curbed

After a year of intense opposition from real estate interests, Chi Ossé’s FARE ACT, a bill to ban forced brokers fees, passed a city council vote on Wednesday. curbed.com/article/broker…

OUR FIGHT DOES NOT END HERE. Just as tenants get organized, so does real estate. Chetrit is just one among many real estate cronies hiding behind lobbies like @REBNY and @housingny to kill our people, profit from tax breaks, displace entire neighborhoods, and destroy our city.

A new report from @CSSNYorg finds that "at 71 percent of AMI, most New York City residents would be classified as 'low income' according to local and national government standards." This *should* have implications for "affordable" housing development: hellgatenyc.com/why-affordable…

@BrianKavanaghNY agreed to stand with us & fight to protect our right to stay. As a key player in the historic 2019 Rent Laws, Sen. Kavanagh knows that we must build on our wins & ensure stability for tenants across NY. We look forward to making this happen together✊

Our leaders spoke about the need to expand the fight for rent-stabilization. These experiences of displacement, rent hikes, and landlord harassment will exacerbate as real estate lobbies like REBNY, CHIP, and RSA continue their attacks on rent-stabilization.

After meeting with @BrianKavanaghNY in Albany last month, we invited Senator Kavanagh to visit our chapter at the Chinatown office. Our tenant leaders shared why we need to strengthen and expand rent-stabilization in New York:

The real estate industry isn’t just buying Albany. They’re elected themselves to office and weakening laws to protect their wealth.
