🦔 California's Digital Age Assurance Act (AB 1043) takes effect January 2027 and requires every operating system provider to collect user age during account setup and transmit it to app developers via real-time API. The law covers Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Linux distributions, and SteamOS. Users self-report into four age brackets and developers who receive the data are "deemed to have actual knowledge" of the user's age, shifting legal liability onto them. Penalties run up to $7,500 per violation. My Take The law passed 76-0 in the Assembly and 38-0 in the Senate, which tells you how little political opposition there is to building age verification infrastructure. It starts with self-reporting, which seems harmless, but the legal framework is now in place. Once developers are liable for knowing user ages, the pressure to verify more rigorously only goes one direction. Enforcement against Linux distros is basically impossible since they have no centralized accounts and users download ISOs from mirrors worldwide. The realistic outcome there is a disclaimer that the software isn't intended for California use. But for mainstream operating systems, this is another step toward requiring identity verification just to use a computer. I've been writing about Apple's age verification tools, Discord requiring government ID, Google Maps pushing logins. California just mandated it at the OS level. The justification is always protecting children, which makes it politically untouchable, but the infrastructure being built serves purposes well beyond that. Once every device knows your verified age, the uses for that data will expand. Hedgie🤗
