FROM POLITICAL PRISONER TO U.N. ADVOCATE
I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of T. Kumar, whose life and work inspired so many across the world. A towering human rights activist, Kumar dedicated his life to justice, truth, and accountability, particularly in the face of the genocide and systematic persecution of the Tamils in Sri Lanka. I was privileged to work with him, and to witness his rare combination of moral clarity, resilience, and diplomatic strength.
Born in Jaffna, an Eelam Tamil, Kumar experienced state repression firsthand, imprisonment, exile, and sustained persecution for daring to speak truth to power. These experiences did not silence him; they forged a lifelong commitment to exposing atrocities and defending the rights of oppressed peoples.
During more than five years as a political prisoner, Kumar refused to be broken. He studied law behind bars and later became an Attorney-at-Law, dedicating his life to the global defense of human rights. From the prisons of Sri Lanka to the corridors of Washington, D.C. and the United Nations, he transformed personal suffering into a principled international struggle for justice, particularly for Tamils facing mass atrocities, enforced disappearances, and cultural erasure.
Kumar served as a leading advocate for @amnestyusa Amnesty International USA, lectured at the U.S. Foreign Service Institute, and monitored elections worldwide alongside former U.S. President Jimmy Carter. He also served as a Judge of Elections in Philadelphia, upholding democratic values with integrity and conviction.
In a life marked by danger and uncertainty, Kumar lived by the philosophy “go with the flow”, not as resignation, but as disciplined perseverance. His calm strength masked an unshakable resolve to confront injustice, including the international community’s failure to hold perpetrators of the Tamil genocide accountable.
Though T. Kumar has passed, his legacy endures, in the struggle for truth, justice, and accountability for the Tamil people, in the institutions he shaped; and in the countless lives he inspired. His life stands as enduring proof that repression may imprison the body, but it cannot silence conscience.
We honor him. We remember him. We continue the fight he dedicated his life to.

Ten years ago today, Canadians chose a more hopeful path.
I’ll never forget that night in 2015. The energy, the optimism, and the belief that together, we could build a better future.
A decade later, we’ve lifted hundreds of thousands of people out of poverty, strengthened and grown the middle class, built a $10-a-day child care system, led the fight against climate change, advanced reconciliation, and made Canada more inclusive and fair for everyone.
I’m deeply grateful to everyone who was part of this journey and believed that better is always possible. 🇨🇦
