This might be hard to believe, but In Japan, if you stick chopsticks upright in a bowl of rice, an adult will stop you. If a kid does it, they get stopped fast. Because that's what's done at every Buddhist funeral. When someone dies, a heaped bowl of rice is placed beside the body. Two chopsticks are stuck straight down into the center. It's called makura-meshi. Pillow rice. A funeral custom. There's another forbidden gesture. Passing food from one person's chopsticks to another's. Also not done at the table. Because after cremation, family members pass the bones from chopstick to chopstick into the urn. Then a third. Using a mismatched pair of chopsticks. When picking up the bones, the chopsticks are mismatched on purpose. One bamboo, one wood. These are called imi-bashi. Forbidden chopsticks. Things you do at a funeral. Things you don't do at the table. At funerals, the rules are flipped on purpose. These customs were already written down in the Muromachi-era manual Reiyō Hissui. Nearly five hundred years ago. For five centuries, every dinner table in Japan has been avoiding the gestures of the dead.
