But by revealed preferences I, like most people, don't care much about the abstract people suffering somewhere, because I buy entertainment over e.g. malaria net donations.

@MGecko117 The physical layer of aeronautics has not improved much over the last half a century or more. We have better materials, propellants, computing and so on, but nothing in the trend points to a possibility of a "space breakout" occurring. Quite the opposite, the gap is growing wider

It’s kind of disappointing to hear this type of pessimistic sentiment about space travel from an artist whose work has been extremely inspiring and influential to me for such a long time. Our species is about 300,000 years old. We’ve only had agriculture for around 12,000 years, powered flight for 122 years, modern rockets for 100 years, and semiconductors since 1947—only 79 years. That’s roughly 0.02% of our species’ history
Nearly everything we think of as “modern civilization” has happened in this tiny fraction of our existence, so saying “we’ve existed for 100,000 years without becoming a spacefaring civilization” is, frankly, an absurd argument

It's a vaporous concept that holds no weight, exactly because no single person can ever be morally responsible for it. Improve ONE life first

Pessimism has really gripped the left, damn. Koseman is just plain wrong, and the chance of humanity somehow not becoming spacefaring in terms of living beyond earth's orbit would require a complete extinction event which, as much as people don't realize, is not very likely.

There isn’t a single cultural value we share with someone from 500 years ago except for the desire for us and the people around us to live, hospitality, and music. 500 years from now it will be the same, we will not share cultural value with those people.
