Federal fraud losses are estimated in the hundreds of billions each year. State financial officers have shown that stronger oversight works, and the federal government should follow suit. @TreasurerOaks writes about why this matters now, including President Trump’s recent DOJ fraud enforcement appointment, in a new Newsweek op-ed. newsweek.com/trumps-fight-a…

It has come to my attention that there have been claims that: 1) a Capitol Space Assessment was completed; 2) this was shared with all state executive officers; and 3) the assessment was discussed during a Capitol Preservation Board meeting. Under SB 97 (2024), before October 1, 2024, the governor, state auditor, attorney general, state treasurer, president of the Senate, and speaker of the House were to assess the use of space in the State Capitol to determine the best use of that space. To support that assessment, the Capitol Preservation Board contracted with an architect, and my staff met with the contractor on multiple occasions to discuss our office’s space needs. The materials we received were limited to drawings of our own office space.  With respect to claims 1 and 2, I was not provided a copy of a comprehensive space assessment; therefore, it was not shared with all executive officers, and I can only assume it was completed. Regarding claim 3, proposed best uses of Capitol space were never discussed during a Capitol Preservation Board meeting or elsewhere with me. When I asked about the assessment, I was told it had been shared with the governor, speaker, and president, but the results were not shared with me or my staff. 📢@TreasurerOaks has released Utah’s 2025 Debt Affordability Study. Utah continues to demonstrate strong fiscal discipline and prudent debt management. The latest Debt Affordability Study shows the State’s debt at 10.5% of the Constitutional Debt Limit, the lowest level in more than 40 years. The report details current authorizations, refinancing savings, and trends in public infrastructure financing that shape Utah’s long-term outlook. 📢 Utah schools will receive $111 million from the School LAND Trust Program for the 2025–26 school year—the largest distribution in history. 💡 These funds, generated from Utah’s trust lands and invested in the $3.7 billion Permanent State School Fund, will support more than 647,000 students across 1,019 schools statewide. 🏫 From reducing class sizes to expanding literacy intervention, technology, and college prep programs, every dollar is decided locally by School Community Councils—parents, teachers, and principals working together to meet student needs. Treasurer Marlo Oaks said, “This remarkable growth is a result of careful stewardship, prudent administration of trust lands and investment assets, and the foresight of those who established the Trust System to support Utah’s education programs now and for years to come.” We appreciated the opportunity to share this exciting news during a press conference at Whittier Elementary School - Salt Lake City. A huge thanks to the Land Trusts Protection and Advocacy Office for coordinating the event, and Utah State Board of Education and Salt Lake City School District for their efforts to make it a success. #UtahEducation #StudentSuccess

📢 @TreasurerOaks joined @FoxBusiness to discuss a comment letter 24 state financial officers submitted to the SEC. The letter warns that China-based companies are taking advantage of Foreign Private Issuer status to avoid U.S. disclosure standards. This loophole gives adversaries relaxed treatment that should only apply to trusted allies. This leaves teachers, firefighters, and retirees exposed to hidden risks they don’t even know they’re taking, while enriching a hostile foreign regime. As Treasurer Oaks made clear, it makes no sense to extend relaxed standards to adversaries. Protecting investors means closing these loopholes. 🎥 Watch the full Fox Business interview: youtube.com/watch?v=evTSNI… 📄 Read the letter: treasurer.utah.gov/wp-content/upl… #RetirementSecurity #FoxBusiness #EconomicFreedom
