I attended the wedding of Jide Kene Achufusi and his wife at Awomimi Village ( I don't know if I got the village right though) in Enugu-ụkwụ town, Njikoka LGA of Anambra state. A 20 year old man in Nairobi confessed to killing at least 13 children and drinking their blood. He had been doing it since he was 15 years old. His name was Masten Wanjala. Kenyan police called him the Bloodthirsty Vampire. His method was simple and devastating. He posed as a football coach. Befriended boys aged 12 and 13. Drugged them with a white powder he either forced them to drink or sprayed directly on them. Then he strangled them, beat them to death, dumped their bodies in rivers, thickets and sewers across Nairobi. He told police he drank blood from his victims' veins because he believed it gave him strength and supernatural power. He kept a personal record of every killing. Dates. Names. Locations. His own diary of murders. When detectives arrested him in July 2021 he sat across from them and calmly recounted each killing in detail. He was not remorseful. He told investigators he derived great pleasure from murdering children. He then led police to six different crime scenes across Nairobi and western Kenya where he had dumped bodies. Parents who had been searching for their missing children for years finally had answers. Kenya was in shock. Then in October 2021, two days before his court appearance, Wanjala escaped from Jogoo Road Police Station in Nairobi. Police said there was a power cut that night. Three officers were charged. He travelled over 250 miles on foot back to his home village in Bungoma. Two days after escaping he joined a group of local children playing football. A child recognised him. The village came out. They dragged him from a neighbour's house where he had tried to hide. Police were racing to get there. They did not make it in time. The mob beat Masten Wanjala to death in the street. His own family refused to bury him. They said his body would bring curses on the clan. His remains sat in a mortuary for months before the government intervened. This happened in Kenya.
