National Former Prisoner of War (FPOW) Recognition Day is observed annually on April 9 to honor American servicemen and women who endured captivity as prisoners of war (POWs). Established in 1988, this day commemorates the 1942 surrender of U.S. and Filipino forces on the Bataan Peninsula during World War II, which led to the brutal Bataan Death March.
This solemn observance recognizes the sacrifice and resilience of the 60,000 to 80,000 troops who were captured, as well as the thousands who lost their lives during captivity. It serves as a powerful reminder of the courage, endurance, and sacrifice demonstrated by those who suffered as POWs in service to their country.

If you earned GI Bill benefits, don’t leave them on the table.
VA is helping Veterans get more out of their education benefits -- starting with understanding what you’ve earned.
The GI Bill can cover tuition, housing, books, and training programs. It can support degrees, certifications, and new career paths.
VA offers tools to help you compare schools, understand your coverage, and make informed decisions before you enroll.
Whether you’re heading to college, learning a trade, or building your next chapter, visit VA.gov and search “GI Bill.”
