Dear Elon Musk, For those who have the decency to study before writing about anything, it is clear that "democracy" does not simply mean "the exercise of voting." Otherwise, we could say there is democracy in Russia too—after all, they vote there, just as they do even in North Korea! Democracy is a complex system in which voting goes hand in hand with respect for the rule of law and a system of checks and balances. The Ukrainian Constitution, like many other constitutions around the world, provides for a temporary suspension of electoral deadlines in case of war. According to the Ukrainian Constitution, this suspension lasts six months and can be extended for another six months by Parliament. So far, everyone—including opposition forces—has voted in favor of these extensions. Can anyone, in good faith, truly believe that in a country invaded and bombed daily by Russia, with occupied territories, elections could realistically be held? Who would vote? Who would organize polling stations for soldiers on the front lines? How would voting be arranged for Ukrainian refugees abroad? What would be the status of Ukrainian citizens in the occupied territories? If the U.S. government were still acting in good faith, it would understand that first, a just peace must be achieved, and only then—immediately afterward—elections can be held. That is exactly what happened in Europe (for example, in my country, Italy) after World War II. But back then, the United States had a serious government led by responsible individuals. As Alexis de Tocqueville wrote, we Europeans consider America great because it is good, but if America ceases to be good, it will also cease to be great.
