Arriving in May 1943, Victorious operated alongside USS Saratoga, initially conducting patrols and exercises. Due to her limitations with heavier American torpedo planes, her role shifted mainly to fighter cover while Saratoga handled strike missions. She then supported operations during Operation Cartwheel, including the invasion of New Georgia, sustaining nearly a month of continuous combat operations at sea. By mid-1943, with new American carriers arriving, Victorious was no longer needed. She departed the Pacific, returned U.S. equipment, and sailed back to Britain in September 1943 for refit.

I love how there was sometimes a British military attache accompanying the Confederate Army. The Southerners would have loved to have Britain join them. But after 1863 that was just not going to happen. Their best chance of British intervention was in 1862, during the Trent Affair.

When Japan created its Self-Defense Forces after WW2, it deliberately avoided using military vocabulary, including old words for ranks. They wanted to emphasize that they were not a military. Now they're planning to bring back the Japanese words for "General" and "Colonel."
