@VITPgame

I am a strategic 2-player board game pitting the Imperial Japanese Navy vs the Allied Navies (USA, UK, Australia, Netherlands) in World War 2 from 1941 to 1944.

@HMWarships Worth noting that she was never actually named USS Robin, but "Robin" was her USN call-sign. Every warship had one, e.g. USS San Jacinto was "Rocket" and USS Iowa was "Lion".

HMS Victorious serving with the US Navy as USS Robin in the Pacific, 1943. Photo: Reddit (user: Mattzo12) After heavy U.S. carrier losses at the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the British carrier HMS Victorious was loaned to the U.S. Navy in late 1942, informally called “USS Robin.” Refitted in early 1943 with American aircraft, equipment, and stronger arrestor gear, she sailed to the Pacific to reinforce the weakened carrier force. Arriving in May 1943, Victorious operated alongside USS Saratoga, initially conducting patrols and exercises. Due to her limitations with heavier American torpedo planes, her role shifted mainly to fighter cover while Saratoga handled strike missions. She then supported operations during Operation Cartwheel, including the invasion of New Georgia, sustaining nearly a month of continuous combat operations at sea. By mid-1943, with new American carriers arriving, Victorious was no longer needed. She departed the Pacific, returned U.S. equipment, and sailed back to Britain in September 1943 for refit.

@JuanCha1228 @Clint_Davey1 "Contrary to popular belief, Fremantle was not an official representative of the British government, instead being merely a war tourist." This is what I meant, he wasn't official. Should have worded it better, I see now I made it sound like he wasn't in the military at all.

@mrjeffu I get it - the defense-force *is* a military, and nomenclature that pretends that it isn't one doesn't make it actually cease to be one.

When Japan created its Self-Defense Forces after WW2, it deliberately avoided using military vocabulary, including old words for ranks. They wanted to emphasize that they were not a military. Now they're planning to bring back the Japanese words for "General" and "Colonel."

@Marky_X_ Columbia makes a lot of wargames using blocks to achieve this effect. HoldFast: Russia by Worthington is a really good one as well.

I'm surprised more wargames don't use a Stratego style of unit movement to emulate fog of war or deception

The view aboard the Japanese aircraft carrier Junyō in October 1945 reflects the grim final state of the Imperial Japanese Navy after Japan's defeat in World War II. At that time, Junyō was no longer an active warship. After sustaining severe damage from an American submarine attack in late 1944, she was never fully repaired due to limited resources and the collapse of Japan's war industry. When the war ended in August 1945, Junyō lay abandoned, docked in a Japanese port with an empty flight deck, devoid of aircraft, and no operational systems. A view from the deck might reveal a worn and dull surface, with traces of makeshift patches, abandoned equipment, and minimal crew activity. Gone were the bustling flight operations that once characterized aircraft carriers no aircraft taking off, no crew members busy manning the deck just a calm atmosphere that reflected the end of an era. By October 1945, many ships like Junyō were under Allied surveillance, awaiting a final decision: whether to scrap, test, or destroy them. In Junyō's case, her fate was ultimately determined in the following years.

@Drednotyandmore Kongo and Haruna were able to escape out of range of airstrikes before daylight. I'm not sure if the Fuso and Yamashiro could have managed that.

Pagoda, level ultimate.
