Dear Mr. Reno, Please hear me out. I have followed you closely since 2015, and I have always regarded you as a thoughtful and reasonable voice in Nigeria's public space. The political condition of our country breaks my heart daily. That is why I feel compelled to respond. While your argument sounds patriotic on the surface, it carefully sidesteps Nigeria's core structural problem. Yes, BBC Hausa wields enormous influence. But that influence did not arise by accident. It filled a vacuum long abandoned by the Nigerian state, particularly in the North, where governance, education, and institutional credibility have been historically weak. When citizens place more trust in a foreign broadcaster than in their own government, the failure lies not with the broadcaster, but with the country itself. Your argument also treats language dominance as neutral. It is not. In Nigeria, media influence has always followed power and political demography, not national integration. BBC Hausa did not shape Northern political culture; it adapted to it. For decades, politics in the North has been driven first by religious identity, then ethnicity, and only distantly by national interest. Constitutions came later. Nationhood came last. This is where the 'One Nigeria' argument falters. You cannot build a functional nation where: Voting patterns are overwhelmingly determined by religion and region One bloc holds demographic leverage strong enough to override consensus Suspicion of the other is institutionalised rather than incidental Let us be honest. The average rural Northern voter, whose worldview is shaped largely by religious authority and Hausa-language media, is structurally unlikely (not morally incapable, but structurally unlikely) to vote for a Southern Christian candidate from the South-East, regardless of competence. This is not an insult; it is a political reality supported by decades of electoral outcomes. BBC Hausa did not create this reality. It simply operates within it. The deeper issue you appear unwilling to confront is this: Nigeria does not function as a shared political project. We operate as competing ethnic constituencies forced into a single constitutional arrangement. That is why: -Poverty remains entrenched despite decades of so-called federal power -Banditry, insurgency, and the almajiri crisis persist -Development is uneven and resentment is permanent -Every election feels like a census rather than a choice You believe Nigeria should remain one because the current demographic balance of power is acceptable to you. For many others, it is not. And that discomfort does not equate to hatred or secessionist extremism. it is a rational response to a system that rewards numbers over negotiation. I do not desire Nigeria's breakup. But I reject the pretence that we currently function as a nation. A country where politics is permanently tribalized, where trust does not cut across regions, and where unity is enforced by constitutional compulsion rather than popular consent is not a nation, it is a managed contradiction. Until Nigeria is genuinely restructured along regional lines with meaningful autonomy or honestly renegotiated altogether, arguments about BBC Hausa versus a proposed Radio Nigeria Hausa are cosmetic. You do not fix a broken house by repainting one wall.

Is It A Good Thing That BBC Hausa Has More Influence On Nigeria Than Any Nigerian Institution? One of my greatest desires for Nigeria is for our government to invest in a Hausa-language-only radio station, possibly called Radio Nigeria Hausa. Then hire the best and most eloquent Hausa-language speakers and journalists, and set up a system that makes the station, though government-owned, completely independent and objective. It will be necessary to pay such journalists world-class salaries, even if the Federal Government has to grant a special dispensation for that, otherwise the idea will not work. Foreign Hausa service radio stations will just snap them up. You may ask, why Hausa? Because, whether you like it or not, Hausa is the most widely spoken tongue in West Africa and is the most advanced indigenous language in Nigeria. Approximately 50% of Nigerians speak Hausa. And for many of them, that is the only language they speak. And apart from Lukumi Yoruba, Hausa is the only growing tongue in Nigeria. All other native languages are slowly becoming extinct because fewer and fewer people are speaking those dialects each year, as English encroaches on those languages. This is so important because, unbeknownst to many Nigerians, BBC Hausa is the most influential and most listened-to media in Nigeria. Approximately 20 million people listen to BBC Hausa each week. Maybe more. I challenge you to name another media, whether TV, radio, or newspaper, with such a wide reach. Media reach in Nigeria is still dominated by radio. Please fact-check me. Again, fact-check me: BBC Hausa service has an 89% trust rating in Nigeria. I am not sure I can name any public or private institution in Nigeria with such a high trust rating! Can you? And that trust rating is why some of the most important news ever aired in Nigeria was broken by the BBC Hausa service, including the famous Yar'adua interview from his sick bed and the death of Abacha. Channels Television may have a reach of twenty million viewers. Some might say that is arguable. But even at that, what class of people watch Channels? You need a television and a constant power supply to watch Channels. But all you need to listen to the BBC Hausa service is a battery-powered radio. And unlike a television set, that radio is so portable, you can take it everywhere. And here is the thing. How can the most influential media in Nigeria be controlled by a foreign power? Think about it. The British Broadcasting Corporation is a public service broadcaster established, owned, controlled, and operated by the British government. The BBC Chairman is appointed by His Majesty The King on the advice of the UK government, and the British government appoints the board. No matter how benevolent they may be, the first priority of the Chairman and the board of the BBC would be to promote British interests. Now, let me put it to you as plainly as possible: The most influential media in Nigeria, which to a large extent determines the world and country view of perhaps a majority of Nigerians, is foreign-owned. So, what happens when British and Nigerian interests clash, as has happened before and will occur again? Yes, the BBC Hausa is convenient for Nigeria. However, it is not expedient for Nigeria. I am not sure any European country or indeed any nation in the Western Hemisphere will tolerate such a state of affairs. For a media to have such a stranglehold on Nigerian listeners, my opinion is that it must be Nigerian. Otherwise, our independence and sovereignty are undermined. We, as a people, must not underestimate the power of the media. The United States is as much a superpower because of its media as because of its military-industrial complex. If they choose to, the BBC Hausa service can influence who Nigerians vote for, what products they buy, and which global bloc they align with. That is too much influence for a foreign power to have over a sovereign nation.

PUBLIC NOTICE MISUSE OF NAME, OFFICE OF THE INSPECTOR-GENERAL OF POLICE The Nigeria Police Force is concerned about the persistent unprofessional conduct of a few Police officers which undermines the standards and reputation of the Nigeria Police Force. Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary actions taken against those who have been exposed, some officers are still engaging in these shameful acts that erode public trust. Even more alarming is the fraudulent use of the name and office of the Inspector-General of Police to perpetrate these illegal acts. The intention behind this tactic is to intimidate victims into believing that the IGP is aware, and approves of their illegal activities. As a result, victims are often deterred from reporting these incidents to higher authorities. We urge members of the public to report any misconduct by Police Officers to their superiors, the Heads of the Complaint Response Units (CRU) in their states or the Commissioner of Police in the state. Contact information for the CRU in all states has been published previously. Members of the public are therefore advised to exercise caution when approached by officers or individuals claiming connections with the IGP or any senior officer for the purpose of influence or favour. In such instances, we urge you to immediately report such cases to the Nigeria Police Force via: DCP Akin Fakorede, Head, IGP Monitoring Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08184077076; ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08037168147; CSP Taiwo Oyewale, Head, IGP Special Investigation Unit, Force Headquarters, Abuja – 08069318238; SP Sherriff Lawal, ADC (Aide-de-Camp) to the IGP – 08094712605. The Nigeria Police Force assures all Nigerians of its commitment to upholding the highest standards of integrity and professionalism. We encourage the public to collaborate with us by reporting any suspicious activities to ensure that justice and fairness prevail at all times.
