When schools struggle to attract and retain teachers, pay is seldom the problem. Teachers say, "I don't get paid enough to put up with X." So by all means, pay teachers more. But we also have to solve for X.

@JeanneIves Teachers Unions don’t have any control over retention. It is the school, the admin, and the parents decide that. Teachers would hold back way more students if they were allowed to.

The teacher unions are responsible for these failures. They pass kids along instead of standing up to the system they control. Public schools run by unions must be abolished.

@rpondiscio Attract better candidates. Retain quality teachers instead of having to hire randos to fill positions. It is a good place to start, although there are other issues to address as well.

I’m in favor of raising teacher pay. But I’m unclear how this will “fix” education: is it that teachers are not working hard but will for a raise? Or that higher salaries will lure capable people from law, medicine, tech, etc.?

Yes. 75% of books at book fairs are graphic novels. It’s obscene.
Graphic novels do not improve a child’s reading ability.

My biggest issue with the book fairs is the number of graphic novels. The kids need more books with words, not less. I understand the need for graphic novels to bridge the gap for kids who don’t like reading. But those should be in addition to books with words, not replacing
