@pointMF @Frank_Connolly_ One thing A lot of Irish don't seem to realise how much the British wanted a civil war. If a civil war was avoided and Collins and others lived I think republicanism would have made approaches to unionism.

@Valhalla322 @Frank_Connolly_ We'll never know what might have happened had Collins lived, but bear in mind we were in rag order after the civil war. That said, it's 100 years on.

Why do free staters think 1920s RA good, 1970s-1990s RA bad? I need serious and sincere answers to this question from actual free staters/west brits/jackeens.

#OnThisDay 1921 Thirty Kerry IRA men ambushed a train carrying 30 soldiers from the Royal Fusiliers at Headford train station. Despite a train mounted machine gun the IRA killed 9 & wounded 12 but lost 2 themselves including their Commandant, Daniel Allman. #Ireland #History

I’m old enough to remember when our Óglaigh na hEireann, Irish Defence Forces guarded the banks with the Steyr AUG & escorted cash patrols in my hometown Carrick-on-Suir in the early 1990s. Even being from this far south, I’ve no sympathy for this brand of “Irish identity”.

This is so poor. They make various directly political points and then hide behind "but we're just musicians" when asked to comment on human rights abuses perpetrated by the Cuban state: channel4.com/news/kneecap-i…

@pointMF @Frank_Connolly_ Brits didn't want to give 32 county home rule because if the unionists could work with republicanism for the betterment of all, there was the possibility that ireland would declare a republic and be lost to the Brits, two weak states were supposed to fail and return to the UK.

@Valhalla322 @Frank_Connolly_ The treaty was a stroke of luck, as it divested us of a shit hole of sectarian hate. Thanks !

Especially true for me as both my great granny and my granda were born in Boston. Thank god for my great granda Mullin who insisted on coming home, my accent is infinitely better for it.

@kneeyockartee Tbh,I think the Irish who got away to the US were the lucky ones, when you look at our country, divided in two, our people divided in three, unionist, Republican and stater.

@Ck1Gran12 @Frank_Connolly_ Sectarian killings committed by the other side (UVF,UDA) were actually British state killings, Mi5 and RUC special branch ran the majority of loyalist death squads. Because section 31,stickies running RTE etc the people didn't know the truth. Brits led us up the garden path again

@Frank_Connolly_ The 1970s to 1990s version was not supported by the majority of the people on the island of Ireland. Their bombing and targeting of civilians was hugely unpopular amongst the likes of Tom Barry etc. There were many sectarian killings which divided people. The border never moved.

@Ck1Gran12 @Frank_Connolly_ March in uniform? If you mean the pro treaty side, only one in nine fought in the Tan war, they were mercenaries at best or worse traitors, 50% of the officers were ex British army. There were Scapateachi around in the 1920s too, probably played prominent roles in the free state.

@Frank_Connolly_ 1920s IRA was supported by the vast majority of people on the island of Ireland up until the Civil War. They won a sufficient amount of freedom to march in uniform without balaclavas or deny they were ever in the IRA. The Treaty was the maximum that could be achieved.

@Valhalla322 @Frank_Connolly_ Their "freedom" wasn't won in the first place. The 26 counties pretty much remained British dominated until the 90s. Also, it was chiefly Southerners who continued the fight until the troubles began and who founded the PIRA.

@Frank_Connolly_ If there had been no treaty and the British defeated the old ira, some of people celebrating Collins etc today would probably be talking about them the same way they talk about PIRA, not in name etc. Brits played the long game in 1921, we just didn't realise it.

@Valhalla322 Yeah it's sad and pathetic really. Their war of independence was legitimate and justified yet ours wasn't... The reason they usually give is the PIRA killed civilians but they fail to realise the 'old' IRA actually killed civilians at a much higher rate.

Tucker Carlson, "What do you think of Gaza?" Zanny Beddoes, "I went in with the IDF, what you see is a flattened place.. I think it's a disaster for the future of Israel" Tucker Carlson, "Why would you describe it first as a disaster for the future of Israel? Tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians murdered, but it's first and foremost a disaster for Israel? It's foremost a disaster for the families of the dead kids" "The real problem with calling people anti semites who aren't, is accusing the innocent of a crime they didn't commit" "The real crime in Gaza is killing people who did nothing wrong" "Those are the real problems but no one can say it because you have to be like, oh no October 7th" Zanny Beddoes, "I don't know what you'e talking about Carlson" Tucker Carlson bursts into laugh then says, "Everyone watching this knows what I'm talking about"

Ireland does not accept the term British Isles - so why use it? Ireland is not British and never has been. Its all-island identity far predates the concept, not to mention it was an Island long before Britain was A neighbourly gesture would be to agree a term, not to enforce one We don’t need further division
