Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 2 (🌟🌟🌟🌟) is nearly flawless. Nominated for 3 Academy Awards, including the winner of the Oscar for Best Visual Effects, Raimi’s second Spidey film deserves to be mentioned in the pantheon of all-time comic-book films. You guys can probably tell that in the wake of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, I have Spider-Man fever. Watching Raimi slice & dice with hot oil in the kitchen like this is perhaps the only cure. The visuals, the sound, the filmmaking across the board is as good as it gets. In my mind, this is the best of Raimi’s Spider-Man films & simply one of the best comic book films in Cinema history.  Those of you who’ve followed me long enough know I don’t usually include personal anecdotes in my reviews, but with a film this familiar & this rewatched, I think it’s apropos. My entire family lives in Madrid & growing up as kids, my sister & I would travel to Spain for 3 weeks in August to visit everyone, which included staying in the spare room in my abuela’s flat in Alcobendas, a small suburb of Madrid where I eventually met a girl I fell in love with down the road (but that’s a totally different story for a different review). The point is that every year we stayed in Madrid, there were only a handful of VHS in the spare bedroom in which we stayed. Spider-Man 2 was one of them.  Rewatching this film now as a so called “cinephile” or as some would more negatively call me a “film bro”, I have a totally fresh perspective & new appreciation of a film I’ve seen truly one hundred times. But without question, it’s impossible to not still experience the same feelings I felt as a kid while watching this movie over & over jet lagged late at night in my abuela’s apartment. The story is still just as strong. The visuals still blow my hair back. The dialogue between Spider-Man & Dr. Octavius still hits as hard. And I think all of that speaks to just how well-made this film is- which is a credit to Raimi.  The seminal sequence of this film comes in the final 30 minutes, where Doc. Ock & Spider-Man finally face off for their last showdown in New York City, which leads to an utterly breathtaking chase down a metro station and through the rest of NYC. It’s a sequence that’s so unforgettable because all of the details are captured to perfection. The sound of each of Doc. Ock’s robotic arms clanging against various NYC buildings, the visuals of Spider-Man jumping around Octavius. All of which comes with the situational suspense that’s built with throwing Spider-Man on a moving train that cannot stop. That’s how you do an action set-piece, that’s how you end a film- that’s how you make an imprint on someone that lasts for nearly 20 years- from the bedroom of my abuela’s flat to running Cinema Tweets.  Long live Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man.
