Everyone should advance in their lives through guru‑bhakti. There is no doubt that our efforts bring results. It is our efforts that yield fruit. However, we need a guide for our efforts, and for those efforts to materialize and yield good results, we also need blessings. Through the right guidance, gaining clarity in life, acting firmly with staunch conviction in noble thoughts, and cultivating saujanya, the graciousness to interact harmoniously with everyone, with the guidance of the Ācārya svāmī, we should gain the prakāśa (radiance) in our lives, as described in, ज्ञानदीपेन भास्वता (jñānadīpena bhāsvatā— by the shining lamp of wisdom) and தீப மங்கள ஜோதி நமோ நம (dīpa maṅgala jyoti namo namaḥ—Salutations to the auspicious divine light of the lamp). Taking Tirumūlar’s Tirumantiram—தெளிவு குருவின் திருநாமம் செப்பல் (Thelivu guruvin thirunamam seppal -Clarity is to chant the Guru's sacred name) தெளிவு குருவின் திருவார்த்தை கேட்டல் (Thelivu guruvin thiru varthai kettal- Clarity is to listen to the true essence of the Guru's holy words)—as the mūla mantra, to seek the Guru, approach the Guru, to obtain strength and ārogya through the Guru’s blessings, to receive the darśan of the Guru wherever we may be, and attain greater prosperity, we all must undertake prayatnā and offer prārthanā . Hara Hara Śaṅkarā Jaya Jaya Śaṅkarā. Thennadudaya Sivane potr'i ! e'nnaattavarkkum ir'aivaa potr'i ! #kamakoti #JagadguruVacanam

Yesterday, we had to attend a family function held in some 4 star hotel with a weird name. As we approached, each of us pronounced the name differently. Daughter: Amma, Daddy, English spellings are always confusing. See the Kannada board for the right pronunciation.

Today we commemorate the birth anniversary of Thamizh Thatha, U. Ve. Saminatha Iyer. Had it not been for his relentless, selfless, and often physically exhausting efforts, much of our Sangam corpus, and their traditional commentaries might have remained buried in fragile palm-leaf bundles, lost to time, insects, neglect, and decay. In his autobiographical writing “Nilavil Malarntha Mullai”, he narrates the extraordinary journey of retrieving the manuscripts of Pathuppaattu. After publishing Civaka Cintamani, he learned of the existence of this ancient Sangam anthology. Determined to locate a complete manuscript, he began searching across Tamil Nadu — but found only fragments. Hearing that Tirunelveli housed many vidwans with manuscript collections, he decided to travel there. But the journey itself tested him with his bullock cart overturned on the way to the railway station, resulting in him carrying his luggage by hand. During the train journey, he was woken at midnight and told that the compartment had caught fire. Undeterred, he continued and reached Tirunelveli — only to face disappointment. No complete manuscript could be found. He then proceeded to Alwar Thirunagari and met Lakshmana Kavirayar, who possessed thousands of manuscripts. Yet even there, the needed text was not immediately available. Lakshmana Kavirayar mentioned that some manuscripts might be in his father-in-law’s house — but strained family relations prevented him from visiting. U. Ve. Sa did not give up. He persuaded him: “For the sake of Tamil.” That night, as the procession of Nammalvar moved through the street, Swaminatha Iyer prayed, “You who are known as Vedam Tamizh Seitha Maaran, bless me with the manuscripts of Pathu Paatu and enable me to publish this ancient work.” Moments later, Lakshmana Kavirayar returned with palm-leaf bundles. Under the moonlight, on the very street, Swaminatha Iyer eagerly opened them — and there he saw Mullai Paatu, one of the poems of Pathu Paatu. His joy knew no bounds. He later wrote that anyone who saw him that night might have thought him mad — such was his ecstatic happiness. He had secured seven of the ten poems with full commentary. The remaining three were obtained later, and he eventually published the complete text. Today, when we access Sangam poetry with ease, we must remember — behind those printed lines stands a man walking under moonlight, holding palm-leaf manuscripts like sacred treasure.

Sarvam went from “embarrassing” to “well done” in eight months, and the reversal is coming from the same VC who trashed them. Deedy called Sarvam’s flagship LLM launch embarrassing in May 2025. Said their 24B model got 23 downloads while two Korean college kids got 200K. Now he’s saying they have the best TTS, STT, and OCR models for Indic languages. Same person, same company, completely different verdict. The part nobody’s talking about is what actually earned it. In May 2025, Sarvam was trying to play the LLM race. They fine-tuned Mistral Small, called it Sarvam-M, launched it on Hugging Face, and watched it flatline at 334 downloads while the Indian tech community tore them apart. $53M in funding, government backing, 4,096 H100s from the IndiaAI Mission, and their flagship product landed with a thud. Then they stopped chasing parameter counts and started building the applied stack: Bulbul for text-to-speech, Saaras for speech-to-text, Sarvam Vision for OCR and document intelligence across 22 Indian languages. Products that solve actual problems in a market of 1.4 billion people, 800+ million of whom don’t speak English. Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic allocate 1-3% of their training data to Indian languages. They think in English and translate out. Sarvam is building natively for Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, and 16 others. Direct Indic-to-Indic translation without routing through English as an intermediary. A fundamentally different architecture choice that big labs have zero incentive to replicate for a market they view as secondary. Sarvam Vision launched two days ago and already outperforms Gemini 3 Pro on Indic OCR benchmarks with 87.36% word accuracy across 22 languages. Bulbul V3 dropped today with the highest listener preference in independent human studies. Training the 500th LLM gets you 23 downloads. Building the best voice and vision stack for a billion people who can’t use Western AI products in their native language gets you a VC reversal in eight months. Big labs will never go deep on Kannada OCR or Marathi speech synthesis. The ROI math doesn’t work for them. It works for Sarvam because they’re the only ones doing it well, and the Indian government is literally paying them to scale it.
Deedy@deedydas

I was wrong about Sarvam. When I wrote about them a year ago, I felt like the direction to train small "indic" language models was wrong. But boy, have they turned it around. They have the best text-to-speech, speech-to text, and OCR models for Indic languages, and that's actually really valuable. The pricing is very reasonable. And the website is not only beautifully designed but dirt easy to use. They're filling a well needed gap in the ecosystem and doing things big labs will probably never focus on to the fullest extent (at least in the short term). I don't know anything about the business, but there's a lot to appreciate about what they've build technologically and I can't remember the last time I felt that way about software products coming out of India. Well done.

As an example of the saying பழையன கழிதல் புதியன புகுதல் (Pazhaiyana kazhidal, pudhiyana pugudhal—letting go of the old and welcoming the new), the festival of Bhogi, associated with Lord Indra, and Pongal, associated with Lord Sūrya, are celebrated. To ensure agricultural prosperity, for the world to live in subhikṣam (abundance), and for all people to enjoy a long ayus (life span) and ārogya, free from illness or diseases, we perform Sauram, worship Sūrya Bhagavān. In many towns, Sūrya pūjā is performed. On specific days, the rays of the sun fall directly into the garbhagṛha, and on those very days, special pūjās are conducted. In many districts of South India, this worship of Sūrya continues even today properly, owing to the constancy of nature. At a place called Navapashanam, people perform pūjā excellently to Sūrya Bhagavān, pradhāna among the Navagrahas. Suryanar Kovil is also a kṣetra of prasiddhi with a magnificent temple. People have been observing this national tradition of Sūrya worship with great reverence. In inscriptions and various caritra purāṇa notes, we find references to this Pongal worship, marking the end of Mārghazhi month and the beginning of the auspicious Uttarāyaṇa puṇyakāla on the first day of Thai, with abhishekams, utsavams, and tīrthavāri.
