China’s courts have ruled that companies cannot fire workers to replace them with AI.
In a landmark case, a quality assurance supervisor named Zhou — hired in 2022 specifically to oversee AI-generated outputs — was told in 2025 that his entire role would be replaced by a large language model. The company offered him a demoted position with a 40% pay cut. When he refused, he was fired and given a $45,000 severance package.
Zhou challenged the dismissal through government arbitration. The court ruled in his favor, declaring that the adoption of AI does not constitute legal grounds for terminating an existing employment contract.
This decision sends a strong message: while companies may integrate AI to improve efficiency, they cannot use it as an excuse to bypass labor protections or unilaterally dismiss workers. The ruling is expected to set an important precedent as automation continues to reshape the global workforce.
