I feel like people are dragging this out and missing the big picture. Women and gay men don’t know these players, generally, because we have other interests (I know Jokic and Wemby but that’s because I don’t touch grass and i am a meme connoisseur. None of my female friends know them, because they have healthy lives and don’t know celebrities outside of their scopes of interest). But men think our interests are irrelevant, invalid and unworthy of consideration, because they don’t see us as full people. Until our “faves” are co-opted by the male gaze, to them these people don’t matter or count. But since they, men, are the universe, they’ll happily call the top 50 basketball players universal household names. Add to this Americanism, which is another form of main character syndrome (as is being a man), and you’ll be told LeBron is more famous than Shakira for instance. He’s not. Megan has + x2 the number of followers Klay has, on social media platforms. Thousands of people show up to see her perform as a solo headliner. Thousands of people would not show up to watch that beige totem face shoot into a hoop alone, even with a dressed up performance. Let’s dead this convo, it reeks of typical • internet male • bad faith for everything and anything that doesn’t center his own interests.
