My primary concern for a game like what marathon presents is the long term “hook”. Tarkov’s attention to detail and its many, many moving parts makes for a steep learning curve, but at the same time provides an amount of depth that keeps people learning. Encounters offer multiple learning opportunities that give players a desire to run it back to improve upon where things went wrong. “I’ll get them next time” etc. Games like the cycle, DMZ, et al watered down this experience to the point of having color coded guns/ammo, offered up these things in abundance via vendors, and made it so players never felt what I call “pressured to improve”. Successful extraction games make players take a step back and reassess engagements and find new ways to be successful. They make people stay nervous and worried. When you make games like this more simplistic and “arcadey”, you dilute the immersion, kill people’s inquisitive nature to experiment, and in many cases bore people once they figure out a “meta” that makes them more money than they can realistically lose, no matter how hard they try. I am concerned for the extraction shooter genre as a whole, in all honesty. A lot of what I’ve seen reminds me of the BR craze that hit in 2017-2018 and how only a few of them have survived the test of time. Marathon will need to rewrite the “extraction game” to have staying power, and I hope they do, because the genre needs it.
