Only about a third of Americans now believe a four-year college degree is worth the cost. Increasingly, students and families are questioning it too. As many colleges across the country face shrinking enrollment, more than 60 institutions are now offering students a faster path to graduation. to.pbs.org/4eRDxCp

Americans are saving less as the everyday cost of living rises and wages struggle to keep up. The personal savings rate — defined as the share of income Americans have after taxes and expenses — hit 2.6% in April, according to data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis released on Thursday. That’s down from 3.2% in March, and 5.8% a year prior. Full details: cnb.cx/4fN6Ia4

AI is largely developed by men with uses that are biased against and predatory toward women. Faced with threats to their livelihoods, many admin assistants have felt forced to use it. Women make up 86% of those in jobs vulnerable to be replaced by AI. 19thnews.org/2026/05/women-…

AI will eliminate 92 million jobs by 2030, and create 170 million new ones. Net result: +78 million jobs. But here's what the headline misses: The jobs eliminated are mostly low-skill, low-pay, entry-level. The jobs created mostly require skills most people don't yet have. It's not a jobs crisis. It's a skills crisis. SOURCE: World Economic Forum Future of Jobs Report 2025.

The AI numbers are starting to look very ugly. Even under "best case" assumptions, FT's own data shows Microsoft AI ROI at -9%, Google at -15%, Meta at -28%, Oracle at -35%. Only Amazon barely comes out positive. This is exactly why I keep comparing this to the dot-com era. Incredible technology does not automatically mean sustainable economics. The internet survived. Most internet companies didn't. Right now hyperscalers are spending trillions hoping future demand catches up to present capex. That's not certainty. That's a leveraged bet.
