Indeed. Blaming the other party for a shutdown is about establishing how they have power over you and are abusing it. Trump is so obsessed with seemingly like he is in control that he is categorically incapable of playing the part.

After being given additional context, voters overwhelmingly said Democrats should not withhold votes to fund the government. The one group that disagreed with this is Democrats, who narrowly supported withholding votes and shutting down the government by a two-point margin.

Great that Vought is outright saying that his stated reason for cutting off funds is completely pretextual! It would be wonderful is some reporters were willing to ask him about that and point out the obvious shakedown he is attempting.

The rise of AI chatbots have made customer service for major companies somehow even worse than before. This is probably an area where banning the use of generative AI would be popular and a net benefit to the economy because it would free up a bunch of wasted time.

The downside here is that legitimate cases will be endlessly bogged down by this. A law which would have made it even harder to bring Trump to justice for his crimes seems like a nonstarter.

The dynamics now are different. Schumer seems to understand how angry the base was over the previous capitulation and is carefully trying to maintain his own position. A shutdown will be painful but won't destroy the global economy. The risk of getting blamed is just lower.

I was upset at the time with moderate Dems for caving on the debt ceiling fight, but in retrospect I think that was probably the right call politically. A default would have had massive economic consequences and would have been easy to pin on Dems.
